New Delhi, Dec 2 (NationPress) The fitness and readiness of Vice-captain Shubman Gill for India’s upcoming T20I series against South Africa, commencing on December 9, will be a key focus when the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee gathers in Raipur on Wednesday, the same day as the second ODI, to finalize the 15-member squad.
Gill sustained a neck injury during the Kolkata Test against South Africa, forcing him to retire hurt after scoring just four runs. Since that incident, he has been sidelined, having traveled to Mumbai after being ruled out of the Guwahati Test to consult Dr. Abhay Nene, and subsequently returned to his hometown Chandigarh for further recovery.
According to IANS, Gill arrived at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru on Tuesday for additional rehabilitation. "The Indian team for the T20Is must gather by December 6, so the selectors need to make their choices on Wednesday. Currently, Gill's chances of participating in the T20I series are rated at 50-50,"
an insider informed IANS.
"He may attempt to bat and gauge how he feels before a final decision is reached regarding his inclusion in the forthcoming series," the source added.
If Gill is unavailable, either Sanju Samson or Yashasvi Jaiswal could serve as opening partners for the in-form Abhishek Sharma. While Samson took part in the T20I series win in Australia, he only played in two matches, batting once at No. 3, and Jaiswal was not included in the squad.
The selection committee is also likely to reintegrate seam-bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya into the Suryakumar Yadav-led T20I squad following his successful return for Baroda in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
"The selections will offer insights into the main squad for the T20 World Cup," the sources indicated. Pandya was recovering from a left quadriceps injury sustained during the victorious Asia Cup campaign in the UAE in September. Upon returning to competitive play, he recorded 1-52 in four overs and scored an unbeaten 77, leading Baroda to a seven-wicket victory over Punjab in Hyderabad.
India’s five-match T20I series against Aiden Markram-led South Africa is set to kick off in Cuttack on December 9, followed by matches in New Chandigarh on December 11, Dharamsala on December 14, Lucknow on December 17, and Ahmedabad on December 19.
