New Delhi, Aug 31 (NationPress) Indian badminton icon Pullela Gopichand has emphasized the striking parallels between the sports of Kabaddi and badminton, noting that both require keen mental acuity, strong core muscles, rapid agility, and the same instinct of ‘hit and get back’.
The opening match of the Pro Kabaddi League Season 12, which also marked National Sports Day, attracted significant attention as numerous sports legends, including Gopichand, hockey great Dhanraj Pillay, Paralympic medallist Yogesh Kathuniya, emerging Rajasthan Royals talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and kabaddi superstar Pardeep Narwal, gathered to celebrate.
In an interview with JioStar during the PKL 12 festivities, Gopichand expressed his admiration for kabaddi and the broader impact of sports in fostering national pride.
"I've witnessed several kabaddi matches, including finals from previous seasons. I've been fortunate to enjoy some truly thrilling games," said Gopichand.
Reflecting on his experiences as a viewer, Gopichand shared his thoughts on the exhilarating nature of kabaddi, stating, "Kabaddi is fast-paced, with action unfolding moment by moment. You blink, and you might miss something significant. That’s the essence of its excitement, and it’s what I truly appreciate about it. The players’ aggression, energy, and the adrenaline in the arena make it an exceptional spectacle."
Discussing the similarities between kabaddi and badminton, the legendary shuttler remarked, "I believe there are numerous commonalities between the two sports. Agility is a crucial factor in both. The ability to identify gaps with sharp awareness is equally vital. Strong legs, core strength, and abdominal fitness are essential prerequisites.
"Moreover, the concept of ‘hit and get back’ is fundamental to both games. In kabaddi, one raids and then returns, while in badminton, you strike and swiftly return to the center or prepare for the next shot. Ultimately, it all boils down to strategy, planning, and execution, which makes both sports remarkably similar in essence."
However, hockey legend Dhanraj Pillay believes that young people should engage in sports, saying, "Every young individual should pick a sport—be it hockey, kabaddi, or any other—and pursue it with passion. That dedication allowed me to represent my country for 15 years. Kabaddi, in particular, is indeed the sport of our nation."
"I have witnessed many great kabaddi figures compete for the Air India team, and after cricket, it’s among the most cherished sports in India. I share a special bond with Ashok Shinde from Puneri Paltan, and every interaction with such legends offers valuable lessons," he added.
On the other hand, Paralympic medallist Yogesh Kathuniya expressed his enthusiasm for the excitement of kabaddi, stating, "Sports have profoundly influenced my journey and provided me with the strength to persevere through challenges. Watching kabaddi live is always exhilarating because the game can pivot at any moment—this unpredictability adds to its thrill. Being here today, celebrating sports and its essence, is incredibly motivating."
