Melbourne, May 13 (NationPress) Cameron Green is poised for his return to Test cricket, having been included in Australia's 15-member squad alongside seasoned pace bowler Josh Hazlewood for the upcoming World Test Championship final at Lord's and the subsequent tour of the Caribbean.
Spinner Matt Kuhnemann has also secured a spot in the squad led by Pat Cummins. Beau Webster remains the primary allrounder after a stellar beginning to his Test career, while Sam Konstas makes a return after departing Sri Lanka early to conclude the domestic season with New South Wales.
Kuhnemann's selection indicates he has surpassed Victorian Todd Murphy as the backup to Nathan Lyon.
Brendan Doggett has been designated as a traveling reserve for the 15-player squad, which otherwise contains no significant surprises from the team that triumphed over Sri Lanka 2-0 and India 3-1 last summer.
Australia aims to become the first nation to secure multiple WTC finals victories when they compete against South Africa at Lord's starting June 11. Additionally, selectors have chosen to maintain the same squad for three Tests in the Caribbean, commencing on June 25.
Cummins and Hazlewood missed Australia's recent Test series in Sri Lanka and the Champions Trophy due to injuries, while Green is expected to make his first Test appearance in over 12 months following recovery from back surgery.
"We are fortunate and eagerly anticipate the return of Pat (Cummins), Josh (Hazlewood), and Cam (Green) to the squad," stated chairman of selectors George Bailey.
“The team concluded the WTC cycle with a commendable series win in Sri Lanka, following a strong performance in defeating India for the first time in a decade. “These series showcased consistent performance throughout the two-year cycle, presenting us with the thrilling opportunity to defend the World Test Championship.
“Reaching the final is significant for the group, and they are eagerly looking forward to the challenge that South Africa will present at Lord’s.”
