Matthew Hayden Attributes Gujarat Titans' IPL 2026 Success to Situational Batting
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 17 (NationPress) Matthew Hayden, the batting coach for Gujarat Titans, has credited his team’s recent streak of victories in IPL 2026 to their commitment to situational batting and playing smart cricket. The Titans, who clinched the IPL title in 2022, initially faced two losses this season but have bounced back with back-to-back wins.
“We’ve been performing reasonably well. Analyzing our position on the points table, it reflects our gameplay. While we are excelling in certain areas, there is room for enhancement in others. However, in our last match against LSG, we found our rhythm and delivered an impressive performance,” Hayden expressed during a pre-match interview with broadcasters.
Discussing the high-risk approach in T20 cricket, he stated, “This strategy is effective. Observing our competitors, particularly teams led by Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer, they execute their plans with remarkable discipline.”
“Although it may not satisfy our fellow West Indian commentator, Ian Bishop, when it comes to our net run rate, it really makes for an engaging case for playing sensible and intelligent cricket. The conditions dictate what constitutes a good score,” he added.
“Typically, a winning score here averages around 213, which you would likely have noted, Marto (Katey Martin). The highest successful chase recorded is 207; thus, the focus is on how we build and deconstruct innings. We have outstanding players at the top of our lineup, although some middle-order batsmen may lack opportunities,” he continued.
“These are positive challenges to face. For me, the crucial metric is how effectively we can perform in those initial six overs. While you can't secure victory in that phase, you certainly can jeopardize your chances,” he concluded.
Hayden humorously mentioned his longing for the commentary box and acknowledged having faced a few balls while training at the GT nets this summer, stating, “Yes, I’ve hit a few balls. They’ve mostly been smaller and white, but it was a good experience.”
