New Delhi, Feb 6 (NationPress) When Harmeet Singh enters the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday evening, adorned in the navy blue and red of the USA jersey for their match against India, it will signify a remarkable full circle moment for the left-arm spin bowling all-rounder.

This match marks the opening day of the Men’s T20 World Cup and will see Harmeet return to the city where he spent the first 27 years of his life pursuing a dream that seemed elusive until he relocated to the USA.

Harmeet's transition from the local cricket scene in Mumbai to securing victory in the 2012 U19 World Cup with India and now representing the USA in the Men’s T20 World Cup is a tale of transformation, perseverance, and the extraordinary reality that life can indeed come full circle.

“Competing at Wankhede has always held a special significance for me. Growing up in Mumbai and playing the majority of my cricket there for the first 27 years of my life, returning to play a World Cup match is incredibly meaningful,” Harmeet reflected in an exclusive discussion with IANS ahead of the tournament.

Once recognized by Australian great Ian Chappell as a budding talent, Harmeet's career faced challenges due to controversies, including allegations of spot-fixing from which he was later exonerated by the BCCI, as well as incidents like being penalized for driving a car on a railway station platform. Despite clearing his name and maintaining impressive performance—his last first-class match in India included a six-wicket haul—the path to national selection remained closed.

“I required a change because the situation in India felt like a definitive stamp: no matter how well I performed, my last first-class game being a six-wicket haul didn’t garner any attention. When I transitioned, I continued with the same strategies as before. It’s not as if I suddenly became consistent or changed overnight,” he expressed.

Relocating to the USA six years ago revolutionized everything for him—not his skills, which remained the same with his controlled left-arm spin and effective batting, but the acknowledgment he received. “In every tournament I participate in, I aim for championships. I’ve succeeded in creating an impact. Consistency in the T20 format is challenging for any bowler or all-rounder,” he noted.

“In all the leagues I’ve played, I’ve consistently performed well. After making the change, my performances began to receive the recognition they deserved. Growing up in Mumbai, there was no alternative route to joining the Mumbai team apart from performing, and I understood how to deliver,” he added.

Since his move to the USA, Harmeet has flourished—becoming the top pick in the Major League Cricket draft during his cooling-off period, leading the Seattle Orcas to the finals in his debut season, and establishing himself as a vital all-rounder for the national team.

In the 2024 T20 World Cup, he showcased his worth with figures of 2-24 against South Africa, taking the wickets of Quinton de Kock and David Miller, while also contributing a crucial 38 off 22 balls with the bat, despite the loss. His recent performance has been equally commendable: 21 wickets in 21 T20 matches since 2025, with an economy rate of 7 and a strike rate of 19.4.

“Since moving to the USA, my performances are consistently acknowledged and rewarded. It’s not like shooting arrows in the dark where nothing hits the target,” he explained.

“This change in my life has been hugely beneficial because games are broadcast live; everyone witnesses your performance, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. Since that shift, things have improved greatly, and I’m grateful I made that decision to pursue the sport I love,” Harmeet added.

Harmeet will also have his former Mumbai teammates, pacer Saurabh Netravalkar and batting all-rounder Shubham Ranjane, alongside him. The diversity within the USA squad—featuring players from Caribbean, South African, Pakistani, and Indian backgrounds—has fostered a culture of fearlessness and mutual respect. “The Caribbean players infuse their unique style, as do the South Africans and Pakistanis, while we Indians contribute our own strengths,” he noted.

“Our common ground is playing fearless cricket, and that’s the brand we have adopted. We respect our opponents, but do not elevate anyone above us, especially on the field. Off the field, there’s immense respect, but once in the game, we aim to win every match,” he remarked.

“The experience we carry from playing in India provides us with an advantage, as we understand the conditions and how to navigate them effectively. We hope that the knowledge we share can be utilized to our benefit,” he said.

“Since the last World Cup, we have excelled, topping League 2 and winning most series we’ve played. Our bond continues to strengthen, and winning fosters our belief that we are doing something right. I am genuinely excited for this World Cup, as our team has only grown stronger and better,” Harmeet stated.

The true test of their fearlessness will unfold when the USA faces India at Wankhede, while Harmeet rushes to secure seats for family and friends in Mumbai. Rather than being daunted by the occasion or their opponents, he and his team are approaching the tournament with quiet confidence.

“People might believe we surpassed expectations during the last World Cup, but we didn’t, according to our squad of 15 players. We put up a strong fight against India and South Africa, who were the finalists of the 2024 World Cup. As a team, we don’t consider ourselves inferior to anyone. On our day, we are all match-winners capable of changing the game,” he asserted.

“As for setting limits, I refuse to impose any on this World Cup. It may suit an Indian, South African, or Australian player to say they will win the World Cup, but for us, we won’t set boundaries. We aim to push ourselves beyond expectations,” he expressed.

He is determined not to cap the USA’s potential. “We don’t just want to reach the Super 8s. Why not aim for the semi-finals? Why not the finals? Why not victory? The way we are playing and our team cohesion suggest that if we maintain our focus under pressure, handling stress will prove to be more crucial than demonstrating skill in India. If we manage pressure effectively, there are no limits,” he concluded.

Amidst the excitement of this mega event, Harmeet is acutely aware of the challenges presented by Indian conditions—smaller boundaries, flatter pitches, and the distinct qualities of venues like Wankhede. “Sometimes Wankhede can be unpredictable due to the lack of recent games, potentially resulting in a fresh wicket, and we cannot ascertain how flat it will be. Typically, in white-ball cricket, they provide flatter pitches.

“However, since it’s a World Cup, they also want the wickets to endure. A lot of matches are scheduled, so they might keep significant grass cover, leading to changes in our plans. There are numerous factors to consider, so I’m not rigid with my strategy. It’s more about being adaptable; if this occurs, we will do this, or if that happens, we will adjust accordingly. It’s about having my plans ready and then adapting as needed,” he stated.

His approach to the format reflects a philosophy refined through years of experience across various leagues and conditions. “T20 cricket hinges on execution. Initially, I was skeptical about luck, but it plays a role in T20. Primarily, I strive to adhere to my plans and execute them to the best of my ability, without complicating matters, as complexity often leads to trouble. T20 cricket thrives on clarity—expressing oneself, playing fearlessly, and executing under pressure,” he explained.

Beyond personal redemption, Harmeet views this World Cup as pivotal for the advancement of cricket in the USA. “We coach numerous youngsters at the grassroots level and maintain connections with them. We are deeply rooted in the passion of the younger generation in America who are embracing cricket,” he said.

“We continuously inspire the next generation, motivating them to participate in the sport. With investment in infrastructure and sports, many American parents will encourage their children to pursue cricket. Currently, it’s primarily passionate kids who adore the game,” he added.

He draws comparisons with India’s evolution in the early 2000s when visionary administration and investment transformed the sport. “The USA possesses all the elements—it just requires effective administrators, visionary leaders, investors, and robust infrastructure. If all of this materializes, the USA could soon become the next Australia,” he remarked.

“Acceptance is growing; the USOPC is aligning, which will benefit us significantly. Athletes will receive proper support. Infrastructure remains a barrier preventing the USA from achieving full member nation status. The talent pool is present; we merely need the structure,” he concluded.

As he prepares to step onto the field at Wankhede Stadium wearing the USA colors, Harmeet will treasure this unique homecoming, a journey fueled by the pursuit of dreams and the courage to transcend borders. “Every teammate has their personal story, and we have all come a long way from our beginnings. That embodies the essence of America—the land of opportunities.

“Those who were denied opportunities in their home countries made the leap, arrived in America with renewed hopes, and continued to play the same sport. Each of us has authored our own narrative. This is our second World Cup together, and participating in it in India holds even greater significance because Wankhede is, fortunately, my home ground this time.

“Thus, it holds even more personal significance. However, this isn’t just about me—it’s about the team. It’s about our collective journey, and I hope we can showcase our capabilities to the fullest,” he concluded.
