Will Saurabh Netravalkar's Return to Wankhede Stadium Be an Emotional Homecoming for the USA?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 6 (NationPress) When Saurabh Netravalkar discovered that the India-USA match in the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup would take place at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, it struck a deep chord within him. As a young teen in eighth grade, he visited this iconic venue for the first time.
Every time the train passed by the stadium, glimpses of the pitch through the window ignited his aspirations of becoming a professional cricketer. This Saturday, that aspiration will become a reality—but not in the way young Netravalkar envisioned, as he dons the USA's navy blue and red while leading the pace attack from the away team's dressing room.
“I always secretly hoped to play at Wankhede, ideally for India,” he admitted. “As a child, I fantasized about representing India on that field. Now, I’ll be living that dream by playing for the USA. It’s a special moment, representing my new team at a place where I once envisioned my future in cricket, especially after having to restart my cricketing journey from scratch.”
“I thought I would have to climb the ranks in the USA, earn recognition, and finally make the national team. It’s been a long road of about 7-8 years, and seeing this opportunity at Wankhede is truly emotional. I shared the news with my family, and it took a while to sink in,” Netravalkar reflected during an exclusive interview with IANS.
During the warm-up games at DY Patil Stadium, his family—parents, sister, wife, and daughter—were present, and they will be cheering him on this Saturday as well. “It’s going to be a special experience. I’ll be playing against some familiar faces from the Indian team, like Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube, with whom I have a history. I’m looking forward to it,” he added.
Netravalkar has claimed 40 wickets in 41 T20Is for the USA, averaging 22.9 with an economy rate of 6.9. Notably, half of those wickets were taken during the powerplay, where he skillfully swings the ball into right-handers. In a previous encounter against India at the 2024 World Cup in New York, he took the crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, finishing with figures of 2-18 in four overs.
The USA shocked the cricketing world by reaching the Super Eights in their inaugural T20 World Cup campaign, and they will rely on Netravalkar to deliver key performances in the crucial overs. Although he played in the 2010 Men’s U19 World Cup for India and developed a cricket app called CricDecode (previously available on the Google Play Store), he relocated to the USA in 2015 for further studies in engineering and secured a job with Oracle in California.
Initially, Netravalkar thought his professional cricket career was over but later realized he could pursue the sport again in the USA. The shift occurred when the ICC modified the eligibility rules for representing an associate nation, reducing the waiting period from seven to three years. “I began playing club cricket on weekends for enjoyment. My club had several players who were part of the USA national team, and they introduced me to the cricketing circuit. That’s how I started participating in various tournaments across the USA,” he explained.
“It was still a fun endeavor, but I began training seriously again. My international debut for the USA came in 2019 when they were ranked low in Division 3. However, we had the chance to elevate the team.”
“This reignited my dream; we knew if we worked hard, we could one day compete in a major tournament. Gradually, we climbed the ranks, secured ODI status, and saw the emergence of Major League Cricket in the USA by 2021.”
“This gave us a significant boost, allowing us to play with top cricketers and franchises, which greatly enhanced our skills over the last few years. Hosting the World Cup was another milestone that accelerated our growth,” he stated.
While cricketers from other nations are often full-time athletes, Netravalkar balances international cricket with his job in California, managing training sessions around his work schedule and taking leave during World Cups.
“It’s usually a case-by-case situation. At home, I adapt my training around my work hours. I engage in fitness training after work and cricket sessions on alternate afternoons. On tour, it varies based on location and tournament type,” he shared.
“If it’s a short practice day, I can still work remotely. For an ODI, I’ll be exhausted and plan my vacation accordingly. If it’s a significant tournament like a World Cup, I take a complete break. My employer is supportive, so I can manage my responsibilities effectively,” he explained.
The mental effort required to maintain this balance could overwhelm many, but Netravalkar credits yoga—not just as a form of exercise, but as a holistic philosophy—along with being a dedicated ukulele player and following a vegan lifestyle. “Yoga for me is about life philosophy, not just a means to achieve fitness,” he stated.
“I delve into knowledge through reading and applying it to become a better person. My wife and I share this journey, and that influences our lives positively. Playing cricket or working no longer feels like a burden; it's all part of a unified existence.”
On June 6, 2024, the USA faced Pakistan in the T20 World Cup—a match that seemed straightforward, but the USA pulled off a stunning upset with Netravalkar bowling the pivotal Super Over.
“That was a defining moment for our team. Leading up to the World Cup, we had notable series wins against Canada and Bangladesh, which boosted our confidence. In our first World Cup game, we chased down 190 runs against Canada, which was unexpected,” he recalled.
“Everyone elevated their performance when it mattered most. In the Pakistan game, each player, including substitutes, contributed brilliantly. It was a complete team effort that instilled confidence in our ability to compete at the highest level,” he reflected.
That victory and the journey to the Super Eights were transformative for USA cricket, shifting from curiosity to receiving significant attention overnight. Performances in Major League Cricket garnered recognition, helping players secure spots in global T20 leagues—not just as associate players, but as respected overseas professionals.
For Netravalkar, this led to opportunities in the CPL and ILT20, providing more cricket exposure and chances to study elite batters and bowlers. “It’s been beneficial since our local leagues have been tied to major franchises, leading to increased trust in our capabilities,” he noted.
“Players like Shubham Ranjane have competed in the South Africa T20 league as regular overseas players, marking a significant achievement for us. Many players are now recognized and trusted beyond their local talents,” he expressed.
The USA's extensive training camp in Sri Lanka focused on adapting to conditions favoring batters and spinners, where chasing scores of 200 is commonplace.
“We anticipate that batters will aggressively target fast bowlers, and while some deliveries may get hit, it’s crucial to maximize our effectiveness,” he said.
However, all considerations fade when discussing his homecoming to Wankhede. “It’s essential to embrace the emotions. I will undoubtedly feel nostalgic and emotional. But once I step onto the field, I aim to concentrate solely on my performance and absorb the energy from the crowd, hoping for a thrilling atmosphere,” he concluded.
While the USA faces daunting challenges in their quest to advance, Netravalkar’s definition of success transcends mere results. “If we’re making the right moves, even if we falter sometimes, that’s acceptable,” he said.
“It's about measuring our progress since the last time we played. If we’ve prepared thoroughly and executed our plans to the best of our ability, that’s a victory in itself, regardless of the outcome. If we achieve favorable results, it will indeed be historic, but we shall see how it unfolds,” he stated.
As Netravalkar reflects on the children who might have witnessed that historic victory against Pakistan, mimicking the bowling actions of Indian legends in his Mumbai neighborhood, he acknowledges the responsibility of delivering results while understanding that the outcome is ultimately beyond their control.
“Our focus is on maintaining our fitness and skills, striving to represent our country to the best of our abilities. That’s our commitment, and we trust that the results will follow.”
Saturday evening at Wankhede Stadium will blur the lines between the teenage boy who once dreamed of donning India’s colors and the man realizing that dream while proudly representing the USA. The improbable journey has already begun; Saturday marks Netravalkar’s long-awaited return home.
