Mumbai, Feb 6 (NationPress) As India gears up to defend their title in the Men’s T20 World Cup, the uncertainty surrounding the availability of pace-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana has raised concerns over potential replacements for the prestigious tournament.

Rana, who has accumulated nine T20I appearances so far, sustained a knee injury during a warm-up match against South Africa at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. He was observed limping off the field while holding his knee after bowling just one over, during which he conceded 16 runs and had to abort his run-up twice.

Despite India captain Suryakumar Yadav asserting that Rana has not been officially ruled out, sources have indicated to IANS that veteran pacer Mohammed Siraj is currently the leading candidate for his replacement. Additionally, seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna are also being evaluated.

“At this moment, no decision has been made regarding Rana's replacement. A suitable candidate will be determined in consultation with relevant stakeholders. It is certain that the choice will be narrowed down to these three players, with Siraj slightly in the lead,” the sources elaborated.

While Rana may not have been a guaranteed starter in India's playing eleven for the World Cup, his capacity to bat effectively at positions eight or nine adds valuable balance to the team, alongside his bowling capabilities.

In recent months, Rana has exhibited potential in enhancing India’s batting depth.

Siraj has earned 16 T20I caps and was part of the squad that triumphed in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. Prasidh, who clinched the Purple Cap as the leading wicket-taker in IPL 2025, has appeared in five T20Is for India, all in 2023.

Reddy has participated in four T20Is and is currently competing for Andhra in their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Bengal at the Bengal Cricket Academy Ground in Kalyani. With India also concerned about Washington Sundar’s fitness for the major event, finding a replacement for Rana is crucial for the team seeking to commence their title defense on a high note at home.
