Will Siraj Step Up as Harshit Rana's Replacement for India's Opening T20 World Cup Match?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 6 (NationPress) - The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 has given the green light for veteran fast bowler Mohammad Siraj to replace Harshit Rana in the Indian squad following Rana's exit due to a knee injury incurred during a recent warm-up match against South Africa.
Siraj, who boasts a record of 45 Tests, 50 ODIs, and 16 T20Is, is stepping in after Rana sustained an injury to his right knee on February 4 during the warm-up match.
Before a player can be officially included in the squad, the replacement must receive approval from the Event Technical Committee (ETC).
The ETC for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 comprises Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket), Gaurav Saxena (IBC Representative), Hemang Amin (Host Representative), and Shaun Pollock (Independent Representative).
Earlier reports indicated that with Rana's injury sidelining him, Siraj emerged as the prime candidate for the role, despite discussions around Prasidh Krishna or Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has recently recovered from an injury, due to their batting capability.
Ultimately, the Indian team management opted for the seasoned Siraj.
Rana, with nine T20I caps to his name, faced injury during the warm-up match at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Wednesday. He was seen limping off the field while holding his knee after bowling just one over, conceding 16 runs and pausing twice during his run-up.
Though not an automatic selection for India's starting eleven in the World Cup, Rana's ability to contribute with the bat at positions eight or nine helps maintain the team's balance alongside his bowling skills.
In recent months, Rana has showcased his potential for hitting big, adding depth to India's batting line-up.
Siraj was part of the squad that clinched victory in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. Prasidh, who was the Purple Cap recipient for leading wicket-taker in IPL 2025, has participated in five T20Is for India, all during 2023.
