New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns regarding Harshit Rana's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad, emphasizing that the seam-bowling all-rounder's statistics are quite disappointing and that he had a lackluster performance during IPL 2025.
Earlier this year, Rana made his T20I debut as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube, impressively taking three wickets for 33 runs in India's victory over England in Pune. However, in IPL 2025, he managed to secure only 15 wickets across 13 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), averaging 29.86, and his economy rate stood at 10.18.
"Harshit Rana's situation is intriguing. It's worth discussing since he stepped in as a concussion replacement for Shivam Dube, took three wickets, and earned the Player of the Match title, which was commendable. But what about his performance before and after that?"
"His last IPL was relatively mediocre. His performances have not been impressive. His statistics do not support his selection for the team," Chopra stated on his YouTube channel on Wednesday.
He also suggested that players like Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna might have been more suitable choices over Rana for India's fast bowling lineup, which includes Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya. "The reality is that he may not even play in all matches. He might only get a chance when Bumrah is unavailable," Chopra added.
"If he isn't getting playing time, it raises the question of whether his inclusion matters. However, looking at recent performances, Prasidh Krishna should have been given an opportunity, or Mohammed Siraj could have been considered. Yet, the team has once again opted for Harshit," Chopra concluded.
