Mumbai, July 21 (NationPress) Former India opener Aakash Chopra has criticized the team management regarding their decisions during the England tour, specifically the removal of Harshit Rana from the squad after he was initially brought in as a cover before the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Subsequently, Anshul Kamboj has been called in for the same role.
The Indian team management had retained Harshit Rana after the India A tour as a backup for the first Test, amid uncertainties about the availability of several fast bowlers, including the mainstay Jasprit Bumrah. However, Rana was sent home before the second Test, with Akash Deep stepping in as a substitute for the rested Bumrah.
With the series now swinging against India at 1-2, and Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out for the entire series with Arshdeep Singh also missing the fourth Test, the management has opted for Anshul Kamboj.
Chopra expressed his astonishment at the inconsistency displayed by the management regarding the selection of pace bowlers, questioning how Rana, who was seen as a viable option for the first Test, is not considered suitable for the fourth match of the ongoing series.
"It's quite intriguing. There was considerable buzz about Anshul Kamboj. He performed admirably for India A, yet when the first opportunity arose, the management opted for Harshit Rana. Anshul was sent back home, and now we hear his name once more," Chopra remarked on his YouTube channel.
"Harshit Rana is no longer in the squad. It makes one wonder how decisions are made about who stays and who is let go. If we consider performances for India A, Anshul's was superior, yet continuity seemed to favor Rana," he added.
Chopra was disappointed with the lack of transparency from the team management regarding the decision to send Rana back without giving him a chance after the first match, especially now that Kamboj is being recalled for the fourth Test scheduled in Manchester from Thursday.
He raised concerns about the ambiguity and inconsistency in selecting pace bowlers as substitutes.
"If that was the case, Rana should still be part of the team. Instead, we have Kamboj. There’s absolutely no clarity," Chopra stated.
"Perhaps the management is aware, but no one is sharing any information. This isn’t surprising. Anshul Kamboj deserved his call-up; he’s now part of the squad," he concluded.
