New Delhi, Aug 20 (NationPress) Former cricketer Aakash Chopra has raised concerns regarding Harshit Rana's inclusion in India's Asia Cup squad, stating that the seam-bowling all-rounder’s performance statistics are not impressive and he had a subpar IPL 2025.
Rana made his T20I debut earlier this year as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube, managing to take three wickets for 33 runs in India's victory over England in Pune. During IPL 2025, Rana secured 15 wickets in 13 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at an average of 29.86, with an economy rate of 10.18.
Chopra commented, "Harshit Rana's situation is quite intriguing. His selection merits discussion because he initially came in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube, took three wickets and earned the Player of the Match award, which was commendable. But what about his performance outside of that match?"
He continued, "The previous IPL season was remarkably average. His performances haven't been stellar. His statistics are not convincing enough to warrant a spot in the squad," said Chopra in a recent YouTube video.
Chopra also suggested that players like Mohammed Siraj or Prasidh Krishna might have been preferable choices over Rana in India's fast bowling lineup, which includes Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya. "The reality is he may not even participate in most matches. In fact, he might only play when Bumrah is unavailable," he noted.
"If he isn't getting regular playtime, it raises the question of the impact of those left out. However, considering the current form, Prasidh Krishna deserved a chance, or Mohammed Siraj could have been rewarded. Yet, the team has again opted for Harshit," Chopra concluded.
