Mumbai, Aug 14 (NationPress) The defending champions Haryana Steelers are setting their sights on becoming only the second team in history to successfully defend their Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) title in the upcoming season.
Since making their Pro Kabaddi debut in 2017, the Steelers have emerged as one of the most reliable teams, clinching a playoff spot in four out of seven seasons.
Under the leadership of Manpreet Singh, one of the most decorated coaches in PKL, the Steelers will strive to replicate their success following last season’s triumph. Manpreet's previous coaching stints include leading the Gujarat Giants to consecutive PKL finals in Seasons 5 and 6.
Having maintained their championship-winning core while adding 10 new players during the PKL Season 12 Player Auction, the Steelers invested a total of Rs 4.983 crore to enhance their roster. Let’s delve into the strengths and weaknesses of the team as they gear up for their title defense.
Strengths
The Steelers' primary advantage heading into the season lies in their retention of key players from the championship squad. In the offense, they have held onto standout raiders like Vinay, Shivam Anil Patare, and Vishal Tate, each instrumental in scoring vital raid points last season. Vinay topped the scoring charts with 164 points in 24 games, while Shivam contributed significantly with 158 points. Vishal also added 43 points in 13 matches.
Captain Jaideep Dahiya and right corner Rahul Sethpal will once again anchor the Steelers’ defense.
Moreover, the Steelers have bolstered their offense by acquiring skilled raider Naveen Kumar for INR 1.20 crore at the auction. With a remarkable record of 1,102 raid points in 107 matches, Naveen brings a wealth of experience, having previously won the PKL title with Dabang Delhi K.C. in 2022.
Weaknesses
Despite a strong roster, the exit of their star all-rounder Mohammadreza Shadloui is a significant loss. Shadloui was a pivotal player, earning the title of MVP with 82 tackle points and 57 raid points across 24 matches last season.
Consequently, the absence of a top defender in the left corner could pose challenges for the Steelers. Although they have Rahul Ahri, Hardeep, and Sahil Narwal in that role, their lack of PKL experience raises concerns.
Additionally, the team will have to cope without former right cover Sanjay Krishan Dhull, who has moved to Bengaluru Bulls. Sanjay was a key defensive player, contributing 57 tackle points last season. Options to fill this gap include Manikandan N, Zubair, and Sachin.
Opportunities
Despite potential defensive weaknesses, players like Manikandan N, Sachin, Ritik, Hardeep, Rahul, and Ankit have a prime opportunity to demonstrate their skills in the upcoming season.
Having faced defeat in three finals, Manpreet Singh finally secured the coveted PKL title last season. Now, he aims to lead his team to consecutive championships, further solidifying his legacy in the league.
Threats
The Steelers’ squad lacks genuine all-rounders, potentially disrupting team balance. Sahil Narwal and Ashish Narwal are currently the underperforming all-rounders poised to face scrutiny this season.
Additionally, the injury history of star raider Naveen Kumar is a concern as he missed significant playtime last season due to a knee injury, limiting him to just 97 raid points in 16 matches. It remains to be seen how he will perform this season.
With the departure of Mohammadreza Shadloui, the left side of the Steelers’ defense may become a target for opposing teams in the upcoming season.
