New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) South Africa's wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has declared his retirement from international cricket, emphasizing that this choice will enable him to spend more quality time with his family.
Klaasen had earlier stepped away from Test cricket, where he had played only four matches, to concentrate on his commitments in white-ball formats for South Africa. His last international game was during the 2025 Champions Trophy semi-final against New Zealand, where they faced defeat.
“This is a difficult moment for me as I make the announcement of my retirement from international cricket. The decision took considerable time as I contemplated what would be best for my family and me in the long run. While this choice was incredibly challenging, I feel a sense of peace with it,” he stated.
“Representing my nation has been the greatest honor of my life, fulfilling a dream I had as a child. Wearing the Proteas badge has been the pinnacle of my career, and I will cherish this experience forever,” he added.
“I look forward to dedicating more time to my family as this decision allows me to do so. I will always remain a devoted supporter of the Proteas and wish to thank everyone who backed me and my teammates throughout my career,” Klaasen posted on his Instagram.
At the age of 33, Klaasen made his international debut in 2018, participating in 60 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 58 T20 Internationals (T20Is) for South Africa, accumulating 2141 and 1000 runs respectively in these formats. He scored four centuries and 11 fifties in ODIs, while achieving five half-centuries in T20Is.
Recognized for his aggressive style and six-hitting ability as a middle-order batter, Klaasen was also part of the South African squad that finished as runners-up in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup. “I have formed lasting friendships and relationships that I will value for a lifetime,” he remarked.
“Playing for the Proteas provided me the chance to meet incredible individuals who transformed my life. I extend my heartfelt thanks to those who believed in me, including the coaches who supported me throughout my journey to wearing the Proteas shirt,” he concluded.
