New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) South Africa's cricket star Rassie van der Dussen has officially declared his retirement from international cricket, marking the end of a remarkable journey that established him as one of the most reliable white-ball players from the nation.

The 35-year-old shared the news via a heartfelt social media statement, reflecting on his time with the Proteas.

“With immense pride and deep gratitude, I announce my retirement from international cricket. Wearing the Proteas jersey requires a level of resilience and commitment that is commendable in both Tests and rewards you in extraordinary ways. It has been the greatest honor of my life to represent my country. This journey has demanded years of sacrifice, but the privilege of donning the South African colors has made it all worthwhile,” he expressed.

Making his debut at 29 during a T20I against Zimbabwe, van der Dussen had shown immense potential through his impressive performances in domestic and international T20 leagues. His consistent displays in South Africa's first-class cricket paved the way for his national team selection.

While he participated in 18 Tests since his debut against England in 2019, van der Dussen truly shone in the ODI format. He played a pivotal role in South Africa's campaign during the 2019 World Cup and later became a vital component of the middle order. His ODI statistics are noteworthy, accumulating 2657 runs in 71 matches with an average exceeding 50, making him the second-highest run-scorer among South Africans, trailing only AB de Villiers.

Expressing appreciation for those who supported him, van der Dussen remarked, “I extend my gratitude to Cricket South Africa, Enoch Nkwe, and all the coaches and managers of the Proteas over the years for providing me the opportunity to wear the Proteas jersey.”

He also highlighted the support from his wife and the South African fans, reminiscing about unforgettable experiences, such as batting at the Wanderers Stadium. “To my wife, Lara; your unwavering support through every high and low has been invaluable. You have been my biggest supporter, and I couldn't have achieved this without you.

“To the people of South Africa and the fans; thank you. There is nothing quite like hearing 'MaThousand' echoing in the streets or the electrifying moment of batting at a packed Wanderers Stadium to the deafening cheers of Fokofpolisiekar’s Antibiotika. Those moments of connection are indescribable and will remain with me forever,” he concluded.

Throughout his career, he finishes with 905 runs from 18 Tests (six 50s), 2657 runs from 71 ODIs (six 100s, 17 50s), and 1406 runs from 57 T20Is (10 50s). Although he is stepping away from international cricket, van der Dussen confirmed that he will continue to play domestically and contribute to the sport's future.

My message to aspiring players has always been to dream big and dedicate everything you have to achieve those dreams. I have never considered myself more gifted or special than anyone else.
