New Delhi, June 26 (NationPress) Rassie van der Dussen has been named the captain of South Africa for the upcoming T20I tri-series against the host nation Zimbabwe and New Zealand, scheduled to occur in Harare from July 14-26.
The squad includes four debutants: Corbin Bosch, Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Rubin Hermann, and Senuran Muthusamy. Both Pretorius and Hermann emerged as standout players during the 2025 SA20 tournament with the Paarl Royals.
Pretorius topped the tournament charts with 397 runs at an impressive strike rate exceeding 166, highlighted by a phenomenal 97 off 51 balls against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Meanwhile, Hermann, batting at number three, amassed 333 runs with a strike rate of 128.08 and an average of 41.43.
Bosch, who has previously represented South Africa in ODIs and Tests, was instrumental in MI Cape Town’s inaugural SA20 title, taking 11 wickets in eight outings. Dewald Brevis is making a comeback to the T20I squad after last playing two matches against Australia in 2023.
Fast bowlers Nandre Burger and Gerald Coetzee are also set to return to international play with their inclusion in the T20I squad. Burger is back after recovering from a lumbar stress fracture, while Coetzee, now fit following a groin injury, last represented the Proteas in November.
Both players are currently participating in the Major League Cricket (MLC) tournament in the USA. “Lhuan-dre and Rubin have been recognized for their outstanding domestic performances in the SA20, and we are eager to see how they adjust to the challenges of international cricket. We are familiar with Corbin’s capabilities at this level and are excited to see how his Test and ODI experience translates to T20,” stated head coach Shukri Conrad.
This tri-series represents Conrad’s inaugural T20I assignment since assuming the role of head coach across all formats. The squad will gather for a two-day training camp at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria from July 9-10 before departing for Harare on July 11.
South Africa will kick off the tri-series against Zimbabwe on July 14 at Harare Sports Club. Notably, New Zealand will be guided by Rob Walter, who previously served as South Africa's white-ball coach.
“This T20I tri-series marks the beginning of our preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup. With several senior players being rested for workload management, this opens up opportunities for these players to demonstrate their abilities and vie for World Cup selection,” Conrad added.
