New Delhi, July 1 (NationPress) Australia's seasoned batter Steve Smith has expressed strong confidence in Marnus Labuschagne, who is currently working hard to regain his spot in the Australian Test XI after refining various facets of his technique.
Labuschagne was left out of the initial Test against the West Indies following a disappointing performance in the World Test Championship final. He was elevated to the opening position against South Africa, but his scores of 17 and 22 led to an average of 27.82 over the two-year cycle, failing to score a century in his last 16 out of 53 matches.
"He’s actually in a pretty good place. I mentioned it after the last game - I thought he performed well in the World Test Championship Final even though he didn’t convert it into a significant score," Smith told SEN Cricket.
"I was impressed with his movements and the positions he was getting himself into, particularly his ability to clip the ball through mid-wicket. When he's executing that from an off-stump line, he appears balanced and in good form. I felt he was batting well.
"Although he hasn't participated in the last Test match, he has the chance to focus on refining a few elements of his game without the pressure of being in a match. At his peak, he's as good as anyone in the world, and I am confident he'll return to that form," he stated.
After Labuschagne's absence from the top order post the WTC Final, teenager Sam Konstas stepped in, with Cameron Green batting at No.3. Both Konstas (3 and 5) and Green (3 and 15) struggled with the bat during Australia’s first Test victory in Barbados, but Smith is optimistic that both will find their rhythm in due course.
“For them, it's essential to practice patience. Cam has previously scored runs in Test cricket, so he's not new to the challenges. Batting at number three can be tricky, but I’ve always believed that it's merely a number.
“Sometimes, you may feel more at ease in a specific position, but it remains just a number. You can enter the game at any moment, especially when facing a fresh ball or if early wickets fall. We must exercise patience with them; they are talented players with solid skills, and I trust they will excel," Smith added.
The second Test against the West Indies is set to commence on Thursday at the National Cricket Stadium in Grenada.
