New Delhi, Dec 3 (NationPress) Pat Cummins might make his comeback as captain for Australia in the second Ashes Test against England, with interim captain Steve Smith hinting at the fast bowler's potential return for the upcoming pink-ball encounter.

During a press briefing in Brisbane on Wednesday, Smith indicated that the Australian team had yet to finalize their starting XI for the Gabba Test, scheduled to commence on Thursday.

"A myriad of factors are under consideration. We’ll assess the wicket conditions and then finalize our playing XI," Smith stated.

Cummins, who was absent from the opening Test victory in Perth due to ongoing rehabilitation for a back stress injury, has rejoined the Australian squad in Brisbane but hasn't been included in the 14-player roster.

“He’s looked quite impressive to me, especially with how he’s bowled in the nets. While match scenarios differ in intensity, he’s progressing well; he has a good understanding of his body. We’ll see how it goes. He’s close, and he’s performed excellently in recent times,” Smith commented regarding Cummins.

Smith also spoke with The New Ball on SEN, where he stated, "The coach, Patty, the selectors, and I are keen to examine the pitch conditions before making any decisions. We have not excluded him from consideration; he has certainly made significant strides over the past couple of weeks. He’s bowled exceptionally in the nets and is nearing a return."

"I thought he did well in Perth too. The practice pitch there was fast and bouncy, and any quick bowler would be eager to bowl with the new ball on that surface. In the nets here, he also bowled very effectively. He seems to be recovering well; his back feels good, so we’ll await further developments," he added.

With Usman Khawaja ruled out of the second Test, reports indicate that Josh Inglis is likely to step up to bat in the middle order, while Travis Head is expected to take the opening position.

Discussing Inglis's potential inclusion, Smith mentioned that selectors have yet to finalize their decision.

"It will depend on how we match up against the opposition. We will have more clarity later today once we assess the wicket. He is an aggressive batsman and performed well during his debut in Sri Lanka, showing good form. He handles fast bowling adeptly, so if he gets the chance, I’m confident he’ll perform well for us,” he remarked.
