Rourkela, Dec 29 (NationPress) With a remarkable blend of athletes in their squad, the Kalinga Lancers are positioned as strong contenders for the Hockey India League 2024-25, which is currently in progress. German coach Valentin Altenburg is eager to develop a distinct 'playing style and identity' for the team.

The defending champions from the last HIL, which took place seven years ago, will kick off the new season in the eight-team tournament against UP Rudras at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Monday, in their beloved home state of Odisha.

Australia's seasoned midfielder Aran Zalewski will lead the team, which includes Dutch sensation Thierry Brinkman, an Olympic gold medallist from the 2024 Paris Games, and Belgium's exceptional drag-flick specialist Alexander Hendrickx, alongside emerging Indian stars like goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, midfielder Rosan Kujur, and defender Sanjay, among others.

“I am incredibly excited about this opportunity because it presents the ultimate challenge for a coach—bringing together such a diverse group of talented players to forge something original. Our goal is to cultivate a Vedanta Kalinga Lancers playing style and identity. Nothing would bring me more joy than accomplishing this,” Altenburg remarked.

“Establishing a strong connection on the field with an enthusiastic crowd will be vital, and I hope we can turn them into our home crowd. Everyone is eager for the season to begin, and I believe the first goal we score will hold special significance,” he added.

Regarding the decision to appoint Zalewski as captain, Altenburg stated: “He brings considerable value because he understands Kalinga Lancers, India, and the sport of hockey. He has a remarkable personality and is committed to fostering a unique culture within the Kalinga Lancers. His influence will be significant for both the coaching staff and the players.”

Discussing the exceptional Indian talent within the squad, Altenburg noted: “Certainly Pathak stands out, but everyone is aware of his capabilities. (Forward) Dilpreet (Singh) is set to play a crucial role in our team. Additionally, there are some hidden gems that I won’t disclose just yet.”
