HIL 2024-25: Kalinga Lancers Name Valentin Altenburg as Head Coach

Bhubaneswar, Dec 5 (NationPress) The Kalinga Lancers have officially appointed Valentin Altenburg as their head coach for the forthcoming season of the Hockey India League (HIL). Altenburg, aged 43, is a highly esteemed figure in the realm of international hockey, well-regarded for his strategic expertise, leadership abilities, and significant experience with the German national team.
For over a decade, Altenburg has played a pivotal role in German hockey. As the youngest head coach in the history of the German Hockey Association (DHB), he successfully guided the German men’s team to a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. His leadership has also seen the team achieve commendable results in prestigious tournaments, including silver medals at the European Championships in both 2019 and 2021, and a bronze in 2023. Beyond his Olympic accomplishments, Altenburg has coached both men’s and women’s teams, demonstrating versatility and a thorough understanding of the sport.
On expressing his enthusiasm for this new opportunity, Altenburg stated: “I have always held Indian hockey in high regard, and I am thankful to the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers for this chance. Our squad comprises a balanced mix of young and seasoned national and international talent, and I am eager to collaborate with both the players and coaching staff. I look forward to contributing to the team’s success.”
David John, the Strategy Director of Kalinga Lancers, remarked: “I am excited about working alongside Valentin. His experience with Indian players and coaching at elite levels will undoubtedly bring out the best in the athletes. His Olympic background and pragmatic coaching style will be invaluable as we strive to continue from where we left off last time.”
The Kalinga Lancers are preparing for a thrilling season, with their inaugural match against UP Rudras scheduled in Rourkela on December 30.
