Bhubaneswar, Sep 16 (NationPress) The Kalinga Lancers have officially announced the appointment of Australian hockey legend Jay Stacy as their new head coach, just in time for the upcoming season of the Hockey India League.
Stacy, who has an impressive record of representing Australia in 321 international matches and participating in four Olympic Games, securing three medals in 1992, 1996, and 2000, succeeds German coach Valentin Altenburg, who previously guided the team.
"I am thrilled to embark on this new journey with Vedanta Kalinga Lancers and to return to the Hockey India League, which has significantly evolved since my last involvement. My experiences in the league were invaluable, and I am looking forward to another thrilling chapter in India with such an esteemed franchise. With a wealth of experience both as a player and a coach, Stacy was part of Australia's squad that earned three Olympic medals (silver in Barcelona 1992, bronze in Atlanta 1996, and bronze in Sydney 2000), along with winning gold at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur and the 1999 Champions Trophy.
He was also honored as the FIH Player of the Year in 1999 and retired in 2000 as Australia’s most capped international player.
In his coaching career, he has amassed extensive experience across various club and domestic circuits in Australia, the Netherlands, and Belgium, and has also served as the head coach of the Mumbai franchise during the 2016 and 2017 seasons of the Hockey India League. Since 2022, he has been leading the Australian junior team.
