New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) Michael Hussey, the batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings, reflects on his time both as a teammate and now as a colleague of MS Dhoni. He emphasizes that Dhoni's greatest asset isn't just his vast experience, but rather his incessant drive to adapt and grow.

At the age of 44 and still immersed in a remarkable T20 journey, Dhoni continues to challenge the effects of time, not only through his enduring presence but also through an unwavering commitment to improvement—a characteristic that profoundly influences the ethos of CSK. Despite having achieved significant success and returning from a competitive hiatus, Dhoni is actively engaged in refining his skills, participating in in-depth discussions, seeking nuanced technical changes, and relentlessly pursuing small advantages.

This unique combination of instinct and a thirst for knowledge, as Hussey pointed out, is what keeps Dhoni distinct in a sport increasingly characterized by youth and aggressive hitting.

“He has an exceptional understanding of his game, which means our discussions are minimal. What I truly admire about MS over time—something that speaks to his longevity—is his constant pursuit of self-improvement. Our dialogues center around minor tweaks,” Hussey elaborated.

“It could be a slight adjustment in footwork or a minor change in swing. He possesses an innate feel for the game, and often, he already knows the right solutions deep down. It’s a pleasure collaborating with him, and his legacy as a player is nothing short of legendary,” Hussey stated in a video released by the franchise.

Transitioning from a celebrated player to a vital part of CSK’s coaching team, Hussey expressed his enthusiasm for his current role, especially in mentoring budding talents.

“I absolutely relish this role. It’s a remarkable experience to engage with players from diverse backgrounds, whether they hail from the West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, or, of course, India. This season is particularly enjoyable because we have some young players who are newcomers to the team and still gaining experience. It’s exciting to converse with them about their perspectives on the game and assist them not just for this season, but hopefully for their entire careers,” Hussey remarked.

This season signifies a subtle transformation in CSK’s established strategy, shifting from a foundation of experienced players to a more vibrant blend of youth and dynamism.

Hussey acknowledged the refreshing mindset of younger players like Karthik Sharma and Ayush Mathre, praising their ability to handle the IPL spotlight with confidence.

“I truly admire their fearless approach to the game. They are not overwhelmed by the IPL’s dazzling lights, the large crowds, or the formidable bowlers they face. They are eager for the chance to shine,” Hussey noted.

However, he also recognized the practical hurdles in merging such a diverse group.

“At times, the language barrier can be challenging, requiring us to communicate slowly, or even bring in an interpreter to ensure clear understanding,” he added.

What excites Hussey most is the balance within the team, combining youthful energy with seasoned experience across the batting lineup.

“I’m genuinely looking forward to what we have in this batting order, as it features a wonderful mix of experience and youth. I believe this will be beneficial for the future. Having experienced players such as Rutu, Sanju Samson, Dubey, and of course, MSD, alongside overseas players like Abrevis will greatly support our younger members. This structure allows for a blend of experience with youth, which will aid their development as cricketers,” he stated.

As T20 cricket evolves into a high-scoring arena, Hussey clarified that CSK’s strategy remains anchored in clarity rather than pursuing arbitrary milestones.

“We avoid setting targets or limits on what they should aim for, as such things can cloud a player’s judgment. Our focus is on helping them understand how to adapt to different situations and conditions. Knowing what the team requires at any moment is crucial. They possess the skills; they have grown up watching T20 cricket and have that instinctive attacking flair,” Hussey explained.

Instead, the focus is on situational understanding, merging aggression with strategic awareness.

“It’s about recognizing what the situation demands. There may be times when we need to accelerate the score, while at other moments, we might need to be more tactical and navigate through challenging phases or less favorable pitches. It’s about mastering batting skills alongside having an aggressive game plan.

“I believe in keeping their minds uncluttered regarding numbers and targets, as players tend to perform best when their minds are clear and they can react instinctively to the game unfolding before them. Overloading them with targets can lead to confusion, hampering their performance,” he concluded.
