New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL), in collaboration with the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the Professional Golfers' Association of India (PGAI), and The Golf Foundation (TGF), unveiled the ‘Golf Growth Initiative’ on Thursday, a revolutionary programme designed to cultivate the next generation of Indian golfers.

Inaugurated at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) with renowned tennis star Leander Paes present, this initiative marks a pivotal change in the development of golf by integrating the sport into schools and local communities, ensuring that talent from every corner of India is recognized and groomed for top-tier competition.

This ambitious programme forges a cohesive golfing community, featuring mentorship from celebrated golf icons such as Jeev Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa, Shiv Kapur, Gaganjeet Bhullar, SSP Chawrasia, and Gaurav Ghei, aiming to elevate and expand the sport. The IGPL has formed a strategic alliance with The Golf Foundation (TGF) to enhance grassroots talent identification. Furthermore, the IGPL is set to establish cutting-edge training centres in Orissa, Gurgaon, and Andhra Pradesh this year, which will serve as regional hubs for identifying emerging talent and providing professional-level facilities.

Going beyond traditional academies, the initiative will offer engaging golf sessions in schools, introducing the sport to numerous students for the first time. This collaboration includes the IGU, PGAI, educational institutions, and corporate partners, creating a unified framework for early talent discovery.

Uttam Singh Mundy, CEO of IGPL, stated, “Indian golf is expanding and evolving, and it’s time to cultivate a generation that can excel on the global stage. By bringing golf directly to schools and playgrounds, we are ensuring that no talent goes unnoticed. This requires a significant collective effort, which is why we are collaborating with Amit Luthra's foundation and the IGU. We are establishing pathways for young athletes to train, learn, and compete alongside seasoned legends, empowering them to become champions.”

A key feature of the initiative is a thorough mentorship model, allowing young players to train and compete alongside Indian golf luminaries. Icons like Shiv Kapur and Gaganjeet Bhullar will provide direct guidance to new talents, preparing them for international competition.

Indian golf icon and IGPL Player Icon Jeev Milkha Singh remarked, “I have always believed that the growth of Indian golf relies on giving back to the younger generation. This initiative resonates with me because it equips young players with structured mentorship that can drastically reduce their learning time. Tennis legend Leander Paes, collaborating with IGPL to infuse an Olympic-level vision into the training framework, noted, “I firmly believe that Indian athletes possess the potential to dominate on the world stage. Major Bibhuti Bhushan, Director General of the Indian Golf Union, expressed strong support, stating, “This is a crucial moment where the entire community is uniting for a common objective called Golf on Wheels. Without introducing golf into schools and reaching out to government institutions or tier 2, tier 3 cities, and rural areas, we will struggle to uncover significant talent, as seen in cricket and other sports. The IGU proudly endorses IGPL on this initiative as it bridges a vital gap between grassroots enthusiasm and professional mentorship. Witnessing icons mentor young talent is the structured support that Indian golf needs to flourish.”

The IGPL Golf Development Programme will roll out in stages, commencing this year with new centres in Orissa, Gurgaon, and Andhra Pradesh. These centres of excellence aim to foster the long-term growth of golf throughout India.
