Bhubaneswar, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Indian men’s hockey team concluded the Bhubaneswar segment of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024/25 triumphantly, achieving a hard-earned 2-1 victory over England at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium on Tuesday. Captain Harmanpreet Singh spearheaded the effort by scoring twice, propelling India to a vital win and elevating them to third place in the standings.

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey commended the team on their successful Bhubaneswar phase following the thrilling win. “We had previously defeated England in the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics even after being reduced to nine men. Today, we’ve triumphed over them yet again. The overall experience of the FIH Pro League has been remarkable, and I extend my congratulations to the team for their performance,” Dilip told IANS.

England entered the match buoyed by their exciting 3-2 victory less than a day earlier. However, they found it challenging to create clear opportunities in the early stages. India, in contrast, exhibited an early attacking mindset but struggled with precision in the final third during a cautious first quarter.

Five minutes into the second quarter, Abhishek demonstrated exceptional stickwork, weaving past three defenders before delivering an excellent cross. However, Sukhjeet Singh failed to convert from close range. Abhishek had another chance shortly after but sent his shot wide, as Craig Fulton’s men continued their quest for the opening goal.

In the 24th minute, India faced a challenge when Jugraj Singh received a yellow card for a foul on Jacob Payton, temporarily leaving them with ten men. Despite this setback, India pressed on, and some exquisite 3D skills from Hardik Singh earned them their first penalty corner in the 26th minute. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, known as one of the finest drag-flickers, stepped up and unleashed a powerful strike down the center, putting India ahead 1-0. His ecstatic celebration, punctuating the air with a roar, electrified the crowd.

England quickly retaliated, as Harmanpreet’s tackle on Payton within the circle led to a penalty stroke. Captain Conor Williamson confidently converted from the spot, slotting the ball past Suraj Karkera in the 30th minute, leveling the score at 1-1.

The Kalinga Hockey Stadium erupted anew in the 33rd minute when Harmanpreet netted his second goal of the night, restoring India’s lead. The Indian captain generated tremendous power behind his drag-flick, sending the ball curving into the top right corner. As he celebrated, India regained control of the match.

England, while looking threatening on the counter, found it difficult to penetrate India’s steadfast defense. As the final phase approached with India holding a slender one-goal advantage, the hosts remained resolute. The visitors commenced the fourth quarter strongly, earning a penalty corner in the 48th minute. However, Suraj Karkera executed a fantastic save to deny Sam Ward. Moments later, India launched a rapid counterattack, with Hardik Singh delivering a delightful lofted pass into the circle, but England goalkeeper Oliver Payne charged off his line to avert the danger.

With time slipping away, England pulled their goalkeeper with three minutes remaining, adding an extra outfield player in a desperate attempt to find an equalizer. However, India’s airtight defense held strong, ensuring a well-deserved victory and a stellar finish to their Bhubaneswar campaign.

Following the match, England goalkeeper James Mazarelo remarked that experiencing the fervor of Indian fans is something they don’t encounter back home. The 24-year-old plays for the UP Rudras in the Hockey Pro League.

“The stadium is phenomenal. The Indian spirit and the passion for hockey in this country are exceptional. It’s the same with the Hockey India League. It’s a tremendous privilege to play in front of such a passionate and vibrant crowd, which we don’t often experience back in England. We hope to return next year,” stated Mazarelo to IANS.
