Sydney, Oct 25 (NationPress) The captain of India, Shubman Gill, hailed his team's impressive nine-wicket victory against Australia in the third and final ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground, labeling it a ‘near-perfect game’. This success was largely attributed to a strong bowling performance and a decisive chase spearheaded by Rohit Sharma's remarkable 121 not out and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 74 on Saturday.
“We experienced a near-perfect game. We managed to regain control during the middle overs, and our chase was truly satisfying. The spinners were effective in the middle overs and the pace attack took crucial wickets. Harshit bowled with great speed in those middle overs; that quality is essential for us. Rohit and Kohli have consistently delivered over the years, and it’s a delight to watch them. This win is special for me, being my first as ODI captain, and on such a significant ground,” Gill articulated post-match.
Rohit, who was honored as both Player of the Match and Player of the Series, shared insights on the challenges faced while playing in Australia and emphasized the significance of sharing his extensive experience with the younger players.
“In Australia, tough conditions are expected. The quality of bowlers is formidable. It’s crucial to adapt and give your best. Although I haven’t played for a while, I felt well-prepared and slightly confident. Even though we couldn’t secure the series win, we will carry forward many positives. Our young team will gain invaluable experience,” he noted.
“Reflecting on my entry into the squad, I remember how the seniors guided us; now it's our duty to reciprocate. Competing in Australia is never simple, just like abroad. We must impart our knowledge and assist them in formulating game strategies. Even after all these years, I revert to the basics while playing here. It’s essential for me to convey that,” Rohit added.
When asked about his affection for playing in Australia, Rohit expressed, “I genuinely enjoy playing in Australia. I’ve created wonderful memories at the SCG - with its great pitch, ground, and crowd. I love what I do and aspire to keep doing it.”
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh commended Rohit and Kohli's exceptional batting displays while recognizing the positives for his emerging squad in achieving a 2-1 series victory. “We’ve witnessed Rohit and Virat perform at this level for the last decade. We needed one more partnership towards the end, but it was a fantastic learning experience for our young players. India was simply too strong,” he remarked.
“There’s a lot for us to learn. India is currently the top team globally, so succeeding in the first two games is something our team can be genuinely proud of as we progress. I take immense pride in my entire team,” he concluded.
