Will India Stick to the Same XI Against South Africa in T20 WC?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 21 (NationPress) Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri believes that the reigning champions have identified their optimal playing XI, and it’s unlikely that there will be any alterations to the team roster when India competes against South Africa in their opening match of the Super 8s during the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
In their previous group match against the Netherlands, India made a couple of changes, bringing in Arshdeep Singh for spinner Kuldeep Yadav and resting Axar Patel to allow Washington Sundar some playtime. Shastri noted that the only decision to be made will revolve around whether to include Axar or Sundar.
“I think it will be pretty much the same side because you've got depth, you've got all bases covered, you've got options, you need options,” Shastri stated during an interview with The ICC Review.
“When there's dew around, you need that extra bowling option. Whether it's Shivam Dube, whether it's Hardik bowling his full quota of overs, or even Tilak Varma who might bowl an over or two, you need those options. I don't think they'll alter the side. The team that played in the last game was a solid one,” he added.
Shastri also expressed his support for Abhishek Sharma, who has yet to score in the ongoing tournament. Despite having three ducks, Shastri views this as a positive, believing that the number one T20I batter will eventually find his form in the later stages of the competition.
“I think the positive is that in every game, someone has performed. It has been Ishan Kishan, sometimes Surya, and in the first match, Tilak Varma contributed as well. He has started well, but I believe the best is still yet to come. I perceive Abhishek Sharma's three zeros positively; it’s best to reserve your peak performance for crucial moments in the tournament. Other teams might be concerned about his lack of runs,” he mentioned.
Shastri also commended the South Africa team for their self-confidence and expects a highly competitive match when they meet India.
“There’s a lot of self-belief, and it’s going to be an exciting contest because South Africa is not an easy opponent; they will definitely compete. Plus, it's a rematch of the 2024 World Cup final, so the anticipation is high,” Shastri concluded.
Both India and South Africa enter this match having topped their respective groups in the initial round.
