Dubai, March 2 (NationPress) R Devraj, the manager of the Indian team competing in the 2025 Champions Trophy, has returned to his hometown of Hyderabad due to a family tragedy.
Devraj, who has been serving as the secretary of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) since October 2023, was compelled to leave Dubai and fly back to Hyderabad following the passing of his mother, Kamaleshwari Ramchander, on Sunday morning. The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, is currently engaged in their final Group A match against New Zealand at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday.
Jagan Mohan Rao Arishnapally, president of HCA, confirmed to IANS that Devraj was en route back to Hyderabad from Dubai. “Yes, he is landing in Hyderabad at 8pm. According to the information I have, his mother’s funeral is set to take place at 10am on Monday in Bansilalpet, Secunderabad,” Arishnapally stated to IANS.
“With profound grief, we announce that our Secretary Devraj's mother, Kamaleshwari garu, has passed away. May her soul find eternal peace. Our deepest condolences to Devraj garu and his family,” the HCA expressed in its immediate statement.
Currently, it remains uncertain when Devraj will rejoin the Indian team, who are scheduled to play the second semi-final in Dubai on Tuesday. Should they win their final group match, India could potentially compete in the final at the same venue on March 9.
The opponent for India in the semi-final will be determined by the outcome of their ongoing match against New Zealand in Dubai. If India emerges victorious, they will face Australia, led by Steve Smith, in the semi-final.
Conversely, a defeat would set the stage for a semi-final match against South Africa, captained by Temba Bavuma. Both India and Australia are the most successful teams in the history of the eight-team Champions Trophy, each boasting two titles.
