Birmingham, July 5 (NationPress) Former India head coach Ravi Shastri emphasized that the team, led by Shubman Gill, should seize the chance to bowl at England during the last session of day four in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test, especially after building a substantial lead of 500 runs.
India's advantage grew to 357 runs as they reached 177/3 in 38 overs of their second innings by lunchtime on day four, with KL Rahul contributing 55 runs and Rishabh Pant scoring a brisk 41 not out. Pant is currently part of an unbeaten 51-run partnership for the fourth wicket alongside captain Shubman Gill, who remains steady at 24 not out.
"If Pant and Gill can stay at the crease for an hour and India bats for an additional two hours, they might even consider aiming for 500 runs instead of just 450. It's crucial for India to put pressure on England tonight with the ball and capitalize on that critical hour before stumps, where they could potentially take two or three wickets. India must take charge," Shastri stated during the Sky Sports broadcast.
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara highlighted that India should be daring in their approach towards a possible victory. "England will likely chase down 450 or even 500, which might intimidate India. However, this also opens up chances for India to claim wickets. Ultimately, the captain and coach need to be on the same page regarding the willingness to risk a loss, however unlikely, to secure a win. I would love to see them entice England with a tempting target," he remarked.
When asked about the pitch conditions at Edgbaston and their effect on India's bowling attack, Sangakkara noted, "There was some inconsistent bounce when Carse bowled. I'm uncertain if the spinners will get significant turn, so they will need to decide whether to be aggressive or conservative. Field placements and new-ball wickets will be crucial. I'd like to see Prasidh Krishna elevate his performance and show better body language while bowling."
Sangakkara also praised Pant’s dynamic yet unpredictable batting style. "I enjoy watching Pant play; his energy and enthusiasm are infectious, and he lifts the team spirit. He brings an element of surprise, yet he is also a clever batter who positions himself well and knows how to apply pressure. When it comes to entertaining cricket, he is the true embodiment of that spirit."
