Asian Games 2026 fun run: 40,000+ make history in Thiruvananthapuram
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
More than 40,000 participants made history on 23 June as Thiruvananthapuram became the first Indian city to host the 2026 Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games Fun Run, organised under the Olympic Council of Asia's 'Asian Games for All' initiative. The landmark event, held at the University Stadium, marked India's first-ever participation in the global fun run series ahead of the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
Inauguration and Key Dignitaries
Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated the event alongside Kerala Governor Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, Leader of Opposition Pinrayi Vijayan, Indian Olympic Association President P. T. Usha, and Kerala Sports Minister O. J. Janeesh Kumar. The gathering drew students, athletes, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, armed forces personnel, and members of the public from across the state.
What Dr. Mandaviya Said
Addressing the crowd, Dr. Mandaviya highlighted Kerala's outsized contribution to Indian sport. 'Kerala occupies a special place on India's sporting map. Its passion for sports is visible not only in its champions but also in its people,' he said. He noted that 115 athletes from Kerala — including 69 women athletes — are currently enrolled in the Khelo India programme, while 17 Kerala athletes are receiving world-class support under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
The Minister also outlined India's broader sporting ambitions, stating that the country has secured hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and has submitted a bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games. He cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's target of placing India among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and the top 5 by 2047, the centenary of independence.
On the Ground: Events and Performances
The fun run itself was accompanied by an Indian Army Band performance, Zumba sessions, a bodybuilding showcase, and demonstration events by yoga and gymnastics athletes. A grand post-run rally featured roller skaters, electric scooters, and Bullet motorcycles, with participation from more than 1,000 children and youth. The celebrations concluded with a colourful closing ceremony at the Central Stadium.
India's Asian Games 2026 Ambitions
Dr. Mandaviya expressed confidence that India would set a new performance record at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, with Kerala athletes expected to contribute significantly to the country's podium tally. This comes amid a broader national push to build sporting infrastructure and grassroots participation, with events like this fun run serving as a bridge between elite competition and community engagement. The initiative also signals India's intent to position itself as a credible host for major international sporting events in the coming decade.
