New Delhi, January 21 (NationPress) - The vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Rajeev Shukla, informed IANS that the board is currently awaiting the government's announcement of election dates before it can finalize the schedule for the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Shukla also mentioned that both Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been instructed to finalize their home venues by the end of this week.
Upcoming elections will take place in various states across India, yet the BCCI is holding off on its schedule until the government reveals the dates for elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Notably, the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati is used for some of the Rajasthan Royals’ home matches, while the MA Chidambaram Stadium and Eden Gardens serve as home venues for the Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.
“We are in the process of preparing the IPL schedule, but we need the government to announce the election dates first. Once we have those dates, we can create a schedule that avoids disrupting the election process or conflicting with matches in the states holding elections, ensuring a smooth operation for both,” stated BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla in his conversation with IANS.
Recently, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) received approval to host IPL and international matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, although this permission is contingent upon compliance with specific terms and conditions set by the government and relevant authorities.
“Regarding the home venues for RCB and RR, we have requested the franchises to make a final decision and notify us within a week. Once these teams finalize their venues, we will adjust the schedule accordingly. Thus, we are currently waiting for the teams’ decisions as well as the announcement of the election dates,” he added.
With the state government's approval now secured, it will be intriguing to observe whether RCB will host all of its IPL 2026 home games in Chinnaswamy, especially since its vice-president Rajesh Menon recently met Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai to discuss the possibility of playing two matches at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Naya Raipur.
The home venue situation for RR in IPL 2026 arises from administrative challenges within the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). The BCCI has cautioned the franchise that it may need to identify a backup venue, such as Pune's MCA Stadium, given that Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium faces uncertainty due to the RCA's failure to conduct elections, which is hindering the proper hosting of matches, despite the RCA’s efforts to keep Jaipur as the venue.
Consequently, the Indian cricket board is awaiting decisions from RCB and RR regarding their venues before it can finalize the IPL schedule.
