When Will the IPL Schedule Be Finalized After Election Dates?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 21 (NationPress) Sources from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed IANS that the board is currently awaiting the government’s announcement regarding the election dates before they can finalize the schedule for the 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League.
Additionally, it was conveyed that both Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru have been instructed to confirm their home venues by the end of the week.
With elections set to occur across several states in India, the BCCI is on hold for the government to reveal the dates for the polls in Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. Notably, the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati serves as a home ground for some of the Rajasthan Royals’ games, while the MA Chidambaram Stadium and Eden Gardens are home to the Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively.
“We are in the process of structuring the IPL schedule, but we remain dependent on the government’s announcement of the election dates. Once these dates are confirmed, we will be able to create a schedule that avoids disrupting the election process and prevents clashes with matches in the states heading to the polls, ensuring smooth operation for both,” the BCCI source stated to IANS.
Recently, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) received approval to host IPL and international cricket matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, though this permission is ‘conditional upon adherence to specific terms and conditions mandated by the government and relevant authorities.’
“Regarding the home venues for RCB and RR, we have requested the franchises to make a decisive choice and inform us within a week. Once the teams finalize their venues, we will adjust the schedule accordingly. Thus, we are currently waiting on the teams’ choices as well as the announcement of the election dates,” the source added.
With state government’s approval now in place, it will be intriguing to see if RCB conducts all its IPL 2026 home games at Chinnaswamy, especially since its vice-president Rajesh Menon had discussions with Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai about hosting two matches at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Naya Raipur.
The venue dilemma for RR in IPL 2026 arises from administrative challenges within the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). The BCCI has cautioned the franchise that it may require a backup venue, such as Pune’s MCA Stadium, since Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium is facing uncertainty due to the RCA’s inability to conduct elections, impacting the seamless hosting of matches, despite the RCA’s efforts to maintain Jaipur as the venue.
Thus, the Indian cricket board is awaiting RCB and RR to finalize their venues before they can finalize the IPL schedule.
