New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) Former England spinner Graeme Swann asserts that England must secure a convincing victory against India in the upcoming five-Test series, commencing on June 20 at the Headingley Cricket Ground, as a crucial warm-up for the Ashes, which are set to take place in Australia later this year.
England's performance in the 2023-25 World Test Championship cycle was disappointing, finishing in fifth place with only 10 wins out of 22 matches, alongside 11 losses and a single draw.
This series presents a vital opportunity for their relatively inexperienced bowling lineup to hone their skills. Simultaneously, India will be missing its two most seasoned batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who have both retired from the longest format ahead of their tour to England.
“Honestly, this is the perfect warm-up for the Ashes. India is a significant series, and in our last few tours to India, we have been convincingly outplayed. Thus, on our home ground, we must triumph over India with a strong performance,” stated Swann.
“Without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, their two absolute batting superstars, India will be missing key players. They do have talented replacements, but our bowlers have the ability to exploit our conditions effectively.”
“I believe England should aim to win this series decisively. A four-one or even three-two result would be acceptable, but I genuinely hope we perform well and build confidence heading into the Ashes,” Swann expressed to Sky Sports.
Since winning the Ashes 3-2 on home soil in 2015, England has not secured a victory in the Ashes and has not won any Test match in Australia since 2011.
