ISL 2024-25: Irfan Secures Victory as Chennaiyin Triumphs Over Hyderabad FC

Chennai, Dec 11 (NationPress) An early strike from Irfan Yadwad clinched Chennaiyin FC’s inaugural home win of the Indian Super League 2024-25 season, a 1-0 victory against Hyderabad FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. This match served as a fitting tribute to head coach Owen Coyle as he reached the milestone of 50 games in charge.
On this occasion, Coyle became the first head coach of Chennaiyin FC to achieve the 50-match milestone, as his team fought for three valuable points in challenging conditions.
Seeking a strong response from his squad, Coyle chose Bikash Yumnam to partner with captain Ryan Edwards in central defense. Laldinliana Renthlei and PC Laldinpuia manned the flanks, while Kiyan Nassiri made his first start of the season further up the pitch.
Chennaiyin made a vigorous start in the pouring rain, with Wilmar Jordan Gil and Kiyan both attempting early shots before Irfan put the home team in front in the fifth minute. He capitalized on a brilliant through ball from playmaker Lukas Brambilla, slotting the ball home from close range.
The Marina Machans nearly doubled their lead later when Dinaliana’s enticing cross just evaded Irfan. At the other end, goalkeeper Mohammad Nawaz made a superb low save to thwart Andrei Alba’s long-range attempt. Near halftime, however, Coyle was compelled to make an unexpected substitution, bringing on Elsinho for the injured Edwards.
Seven minutes into the second half, Kiyan maneuvered past his defender on the right and sent a precise cross into the box, which Jordan Gil volleyed over the bar. Shortly after, the Colombian forward set up Irfan for a shot, but he missed narrowly from a tight angle. Close to the hour mark, Coyle had to make another change when his first-half substitute, Elsinho, suffered a serious injury and was carried off the pitch.
Chennaiyin concluded the match with ten players after Shields was shown a red card for a second yellow offense. Despite these challenges, the Marina Machans secured three points and will aim to continue their momentum in the upcoming match against Mumbai City on December 21.
