New Delhi, Oct 14 (NationPress) Head coach Gautam Gambhir offered a candid perspective when questioned about the ODI futures of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in light of the upcoming ODI World Cup 2027. He emphasized the importance of focusing on the present moment. Nonetheless, he expressed optimism that both players would excel during the ODI tour of Australia, commencing on October 19 in Perth.
Kohli and Rohit, who have stepped back from Test and T20I formats, feature in India's squad for the ODI series against Australia, which kicks off from October 19 in Perth. Kohli returned to New Delhi early Tuesday morning and is anticipated to join the team before departing for Australia on October 15.
"The ODI World Cup is still about two and a half years away, so it’s crucial to stay focused on the present. There are talented players returning, and their experience will be beneficial in Australia. I hope both of them have a great tour, and as a team, we achieve success," Gambhir remarked during the post-match press briefing.
India is gearing up for a busy international schedule, with the ODI tour of Australia followed by five T20Is against the same team, leading into a demanding all-format home series against South Africa in November and December.
Considering the overlapping formats, Gambhir discussed how the players and coaching staff will cope. “I was contemplating during this press conference about the challenges players face, especially with all three formats in play. However, the preparation by the Test players ahead of the series, particularly participating in the India A match against Australia A, has been pivotal. Engaging in the Ranji Trophy prior to the South Africa series will also be equally significant,” he explained.
“This group of players has done exceptionally well in their preparations for the Test series, evident from the results. While it can be challenging, professionalism is key. They must optimize their time wisely, given the quick transitions from one-day to T20 formats and back to Test cricket. For those focused solely on Test matches, participating in domestic cricket is essential rather than just training at the NCA,” he elaborated.
When asked about the potential stress of constant travel, especially with significant tournaments like the T20 World Cup, World Test Championship finals, and the ODI World Cup on the horizon starting 2026, Gambhir acknowledged that a coach is only as good as their team's performance.
"A coach's reputation hinges on results. This is the harsh truth of my role. Players can control many aspects; they can score runs or take wickets without facing as much criticism. However, if my team fails to deliver results, I face the backlash. For ten months, you are under constant scrutiny, but I accept this as part of the job. Ultimately, what matters is creating a positive environment and making sound decisions for Indian cricket. Beyond that, I have little control; it is up to the players to perform,” he stated.
“A coach's effectiveness is intrinsically linked to the team's performance. Just as a captain is evaluated based on their team's output, a coach is similarly judged. The better the team's performance, the stronger the perception of the coach. Conversely, if the team struggles, the coach will be scrutinized as well," he concluded.
