Mumbai, Oct 14 (NationPress) Allrounder Shivam Dube has been sidelined for Mumbai’s 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season opener against Jammu & Kashmir due to back stiffness. This precautionary measure was taken just before the match, as Dube returned to Mumbai from Srinagar on Tuesday evening.
The decision aims to effectively manage Dube's workload, particularly with his selection in India’s T20I squad for the upcoming five-match series in Australia, which kicks off on October 23.
Dube shone as one of India's key players in the 2025 Asia Cup, where captain Suryakumar Yadav often turned to him as a primary bowling option. In the tense final against Pakistan, Dube made a significant all-round contribution - starting the bowling in lieu of Hardik Pandya and allowing just 23 runs in three overs, followed by a decisive 33 off 22 balls, leading India to a nail-biting win.
While Dube is expected to return to the Ranji team only after the tour in Australia, Mumbai has received a boost with the comeback of Musheer Khan, who was out last season due to a neck and collarbone injury from a road accident. His elder brother, Sarfaraz Khan, is also back in action after missing India's Test series against the West Indies due to a quadriceps injury.
This season, Mumbai will be captained by Shardul Thakur, who takes over from Ajinkya Rahane. Rahane remains a vital member of the team and has been rigorously preparing since July, even training during his media commitments in the UK while India played Tests.
As last season’s runners-up, Mumbai is placed in Group D alongside Jammu & Kashmir, Hyderabad, Delhi, Puducherry, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh. The season opener against J&K is particularly important, serving as a rematch of their prior group stage encounter, which Mumbai lost by five wickets at the Bandra Kurla Complex.
