Nagpur, Feb 16 (NationPress) Yashasvi Jaiswal has been excluded from Mumbai's Ranji Trophy semi-final versus Vidarbha, which begins on Monday in Nagpur, following an injury to his right ankle sustained during training this past weekend.
Initially selected for India's Champions Trophy 2025 squad, Jaiswal was unexpectedly removed, with Varun Chakaravarthy taking his place in the final 15-member lineup. Although he was listed as a non-traveling reserve, he is now anticipated to return home.
Mumbai will not be appointing a substitute for Jaiswal in the semi-final, as they possess ample resources within the squad, including Ajinkya Rahane, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, and Shardul Thakur. Dube, who is also a non-traveling reserve for India’s Champions Trophy team, might be summoned to Dubai if necessary.
A regular in India’s Test lineup, Jaiswal made his ODI debut against England earlier this month in Nagpur, stepping in for Virat Kohli, who was sidelined due to a knee problem. Jaiswal scored 15 runs in that match.
This season, Jaiswal participated in just one Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, where he recorded scores of 4 and 26 in two innings, leading to Mumbai's five-wicket loss.
Defending champions Mumbai have encountered a challenging campaign in this year’s Ranji Trophy. They narrowly progressed to the quarterfinals, where they faced a stiff challenge against Haryana, only to be saved by the lower order in the first innings.
The semi-final against Vidarbha will serve as a rematch of last year’s championship clash. Vidarbha, in excellent form, has secured victories in seven out of their eight matches this season, entering the contest after a 198-run victory over Tamil Nadu in the quarterfinal.
