Abu Dhabi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Shreyas Iyer has officially joined the management team of Punjab Kings at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction, making him only the second player in history, following Rishabh Pant, to participate in this capacity. The ongoing IPL 2026 auction is taking place at the Etihad Arena.
Previously, Pant took part in the auction as the captain of the Delhi Capitals during the 2024 edition, marking his return to the league after a serious accident. That season was significant for him as it was his last with the franchise before moving to Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Having parted ways with Kolkata Knight Riders after their triumphant IPL 2024 season, Iyer was acquired by PBKS for an impressive ₹26.75 crore and entrusted with the captaincy. His leadership played a vital role in guiding the team to its second final in IPL history, although they ultimately fell short against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who claimed their first championship.
As runners-up from IPL 2025, the Punjab Kings have successfully retained a solid core of 21 players, giving them a strong foundation as they aim to address a few key positions with the ₹11.5 crore they still possess. With four slots remaining, including two for international players, PBKS is well-positioned to make strategic, impactful additions.
With a nearly finalized roster, the Punjab Kings are set to focus on minor yet targeted enhancements during the auction, rather than comprehensive changes. Their goal is to secure a robust middle-order batsman to elevate scoring in the latter stages and enhance the flexibility of their batting order.
Additionally, acquiring a reliable backup wicketkeeper to assist Prabhsimran Singh and Vishnu Vinod is essential, especially for injury cover or tactical adjustments. Furthermore, the team plans to fortify its bowling lineup by including domestic players in both pace and spin roles, which is crucial for adapting to varying pitch conditions throughout the tournament.
