New Delhi, April 5 (NationPress) The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have kicked off their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 journey with a remarkable streak of victories. However, it is the leadership of Shreyas Iyer that has once more piqued the interest of fans eager to see if the team can secure the championship they narrowly missed last season.

Former Indian spinner Sairaj Bahutule, who recently joined the PBKS coaching staff, believes Iyer has honed his leadership skills. He attributes Iyer's responsibility and capacity to understand each player as vital attributes that have transformed the team into a formidable competitor in the IPL.

In an exclusive interview with IANS before PBKS faces off against the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, Bahutule discussed Iyer’s leadership, senior leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, the PBKS spin bowling lineup, and more. Here are the highlights:

Q. What has your initial experience been with the PBKS team so far?
A. It's been incredibly welcoming. This is my first year with the Punjab Kings, and the experience has been outstanding. Ricky Ponting, along with the entire support staff, and Shreyas Iyer as captain, have made me feel at home, recognizing what I can contribute to the franchise with my experience and coaching insights.

I'm truly enjoying it. Ricky has fostered a wonderful environment, and everyone seems to get along well and is in a positive mindset.

Q. How would you assess Shreyas Iyer’s leadership skills so far, and what stands out to you?

A. I have known him since his early days playing cricket in Mumbai. He has always been a player of great promise and exceptional talent. As he has progressed, he has also improved his leadership capabilities.

He comprehends each player’s needs and knows what is expected from all involved. On the field, he is very responsive to what players require, ensuring their comfort. He fully supports them in their roles, which is a crucial trait for a leader. His accountability and responsibility are commendable, making him an excellent captain. Without a doubt, he has matured each year.

Q. Yuzvendra Chahal, the IPL's all-time leading wicket-taker, has claimed 3 wickets in 2 matches this season. What changes have you noticed in his preparation or mindset as he enters IPL 2026?

A. I can't disclose specific details about our preparations, but I can say that he is a highly experienced bowler who understands his role well. We focus on one game at a time, and he is always ready to adapt to different phases of the game.

He embraces responsibility and holds himself accountable, which is a commendable trait in a bowler. We are fortunate to have him; he not only concentrates on his bowling but also aids other spinners, contributing significantly to our setup with his tactical insights. He brings a lively spirit, ensuring we have a fun environment.

Q. How do you view the other spinners in the PBKS squad, and how are they preparing for the season?

A. Harpreet Brar has been an outstanding bowler with a strong domestic season and is eager for his chance. Vishal Nishad, a young talent we recruited during the auction, is improving in this environment, learning how to handle pressure and play at this level. We also have Praveen Dubey as a leg spinner, who is quite capable, alongside Musheer as an all-rounder.

Nehal Wadhera can also contribute a few overs. The spin bowling unit aims to keep things straightforward and supportive of the fast bowlers, committed to fulfilling their roles every time they step onto the field.

Q. How reliant is PBKS on data for strategizing their spinners against various batters, and how do you balance data-driven planning with a bowler's instincts?

A. Data is incredibly valuable. Personally, I appreciate data, but it’s essential to filter what we present to the players. We cannot overwhelm them with all the data available; we must identify what will genuinely assist them in performing at that moment.

Much of our work behind the scenes involves coaches collaborating to determine how data can be effectively utilized—less is often more. We aim to present just enough information to the players while doing extensive groundwork to enhance their performance at the right moments during a game.

Q. What differences do you observe when working with IPL franchises compared to your time at the BCCI CoE?

A. My experience with the CoE was rewarding. VVS Laxman was an excellent director, providing guidance and allowing us the freedom to work. We focused on developing under-19 players, preparing them for higher levels of cricket.

Working with Rahul gave me the chance to assist the Test teams, collaborating with exceptional spinners like Ashwin and Jadeja. This journey as a spin bowling coach has been remarkable.

Franchise cricket is entirely different. You work with international players and coaches, exchanging ideas and learning from one another. Overall, both experiences have been enriching. It's not about me; it's about the players. My ultimate satisfaction lies in helping each player progress.
