What is PBKS's Auction Strategy? Captain Iyer Shares Insights!
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Abu Dhabi, Dec 16 (NationPress) Punjab Kings' captain Shreyas Iyer provided insights into the team's strategy during the ongoing auction at the Etihad Arena. He emphasized that the franchise is clear about their objectives.
Iyer, one of the few cricketers involved in the auction, joined the Punjab Kings management after a successful tenure with Kolkata Knight Riders.
“There is no pressure whatsoever. We had numerous discussions prior to this event, and our meticulous planning has left everyone feeling quite at ease. We are fully aware of our goals,” Iyer shared with JioStar.
Discussing the significance of analytical data in their auction approach, he stated, “Analytical information is crucial for us. Our team includes two analysts whose insights are invaluable. Although I may not grasp every detail at this moment, I anticipate gaining a clearer understanding soon. The atmosphere is already electric, and I can't wait to dive into the experience.”
After exiting the Kolkata Knight Riders post their IPL 2024 win, Iyer was acquired by PBKS for an impressive Rs. 26.75 crore during the IPL 2025 mega-auction, assuming the captaincy role.
His leadership was pivotal in guiding the team to their second final in IPL history, although they narrowly lost the title to Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who celebrated their first championship.
Iyer acknowledged the significant evolution the team has experienced over the past year, attributing much of this progress to head coach Ricky Ponting. He remarked, “Ricky's arrival marked a turning point. His exceptional player management skills foster confidence and autonomy, benefiting everyone from seasoned players to newcomers.”
He added, “Having such supportive figures boosts motivation and self-assurance in players. It allowed us the freedom to perform at our peak.”
Despite their previous season's success, which culminated in an IPL final appearance, Iyer noted the need for a fresh strategy moving forward. “We can't rush into changes. Our camp hasn’t commenced yet. First, we need to rekindle our energy and integrate all players, especially the new additions,” he explained.
He further elaborated, “Rebuilding team cohesion is essential. Many players will return from international commitments, so immediate changes aren’t feasible. We need a practice match to bond and identify areas for improvement.”
