New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) Former Indian wicket-keeper and batter Surinder Khanna expressed that Ravindra Jadeja should have adopted a bolder approach on Day 5 of the third Test against England, where India succumbed to a narrow defeat by 22 runs at Lord’s.
While targeting a total of 193, India’s top and middle order faltered against the unpredictable bounce of the pitch, leaving Jadeja in a precarious situation as the team found itself struggling at 82/7 at one stage. What ensued was a commendably resilient performance by the all-rounder, who managed to score an unbeaten 61 from 181 balls, yet it wasn't enough to secure victory for India.
In a candid interview with IANS, Khanna remarked that Jadeja’s innings would likely fade from memory as he couldn't emerge as the hero.
“We lack a batsman capable of partnering with tailenders. Once he found his rhythm, perhaps he could have capitalized more. I believe he will reflect on the fact that he could have played more attacking shots. As the ball softens, players like Bumrah and Siraj won’t contribute runs; the objective is to win the match and become a hero. People will not recall this score of 61 not out,” Khanna conveyed to IANS.
Currently, India is trailing in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series 1-2, and they now face a significant challenge to turn it around.
Khanna also opined that despite Washington Sundar’s notable bowling performance in the second innings, which accounted for the wickets of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jamie Smith, Kuldeep Yadav should be considered for the upcoming fourth Test.
“These scores can be tricky; when the total is elevated, caution is essential. Credit must be given to England for their strategic use of Archer and how well they executed their plan. There was minimal to learn from both teams. We shouldn't be inflexible; while Sundar took crucial wickets, I believe Kuldeep Yadav could prove more effective. I’ve always held that the way the pitch behaves in the fourth innings can favor Kuldeep,” he added.
