New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) Ravindra Jadeja’s extraordinary unbeaten 61 at Lord’s during the third Test may be remembered as one of his top performances, yet former Indian captain Anil Kumble believes that a pivotal tactical error at the end might have cost India a stunning victory.
After India’s nail-biting 23-run defeat, Kumble commented on Jadeja’s remarkable effort but pointed out that allowing tailender Mohammed Siraj to face a complete over from Shoaib Bashir was a decision that went awry at a crucial juncture.
“If anyone was to take a risk and get out, it should have been Jadeja, not Siraj,” Kumble stated, questioning the logic behind letting Siraj face three deliveries when only 23 runs were required for the win. “Letting a full over go to Bashir at such a critical moment was a poor choice.”
Jadeja entered the scene in the sixth over of Day 5, with India struggling at 82 while chasing 193. He batted with remarkable composure, steadily accumulating runs as wickets fell around him. His unbeaten 61 nearly secured an extraordinary win, until Siraj was bowled while trying to defend an over from Bashir—the very bowler Jadeja had effectively kept off strike for most of his innings.
Kumble recalled how the dismissal echoed memories of India’s close loss to Pakistan in Chennai in 1999. “It reminded me of that Test when Javagal Srinath was bowled by Saqlain Mushtaq while supporting Sachin Tendulkar, who was on the verge of pulling off a miracle. It’s a similar sentiment,” Kumble reflected.
While praising Jadeja’s steadiness and strategy throughout the innings, Kumble noted that he should have taken calculated risks earlier against England’s spin trio of Bashir, Joe Root, and Chris Woakes. “The pitch wasn’t turning sharply. Jadeja had the skills to attack them. That could have altered the outcome,” he elaborated.
Kumble also pointed out other significant moments that impacted India: 32 extras in the first innings, totaling 65, and Siraj being hit on the shoulder by Jofra Archer, which may have unsettled him before that critical over.
Nonetheless, Kumble praised the match as a “fantastic showcase for Test cricket,” highlighting that all three matches in the series had been closely contested. With England now leading 2-1, he remarked, “Session by session, it’s been a tightly fought series. Test cricket is alive and thriving.
