Guwahati, Nov 26 (NationPress) Anil Kumble, the former captain and coach of India, expressed concern over the team’s recent performances, including a 2-0 series defeat to South Africa and a 3-0 loss to New Zealand a year prior, highlighting that these setbacks indicate more profound issues within the Test side that demand immediate attention.
During the match at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, India was dismissed for a mere 140 runs, resulting in a staggering loss to South Africa by 408 runs, marking India’s largest defeat by runs in Test history. This defeat also represents India's fifth loss in the last seven Tests played at home, as South Africa secured a Test series win in India for only the second time since 2000.
“The recent results, notably today’s loss to South Africa and the earlier defeat to New Zealand, reveal issues that go beyond mere outcomes. While India showed promise at times, they ultimately fell short. A shift in mindset is essential for Test cricket; frequent alterations in the playing XI, batting order, and player rotations hinder stability. Though injuries and form fluctuations are part of the game, it’s vital for India to introspect deeply,” Kumble stated on JioStar.
Looking ahead to a two-match series in Sri Lanka next year, Kumble emphasized the importance of analyzing these losses to formulate a strategy for the future of Indian Test cricket. “With the next Test scheduled for August 2026, there’s ample opportunity for a thorough discussion on the path forward. The retirement of several key players in recent months has created a void that necessitates clear vision and structured planning,” he added.
“The team needs to establish a strong core of experienced players who can guide and develop the upcoming talent. Relying on too many inexperienced players simultaneously without a solid foundation is counterproductive. A well-rounded team comprised mostly of seasoned players, supplemented by one or two newcomers, is crucial for sustainable success,” Kumble remarked.
Kumble, regarded as one of the finest leg-spinners in cricket, expressed disappointment over India’s continued batting difficulties against South Africa. This was evident as, apart from Ravindra Jadeja’s 54 runs, none of the other batsmen managed to score even 20 runs.
“It’s quite disheartening for India. Throughout the four innings, the team could only muster a maximum of 83.5 overs, primarily due to a resilient partnership between Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar,” he lamented.
“Today, however, it was a clear capitulation. South Africa’s bowling was exceptional, and while the playing conditions were tough, achieving success required grit, adaptability, and resolve. Ravindra Jadeja exemplified this by effectively countering the spin, taking charge, and maintaining a positive approach,” he noted.
“Regrettably, this issue has recurred with various bowlers, teams, and slightly changing conditions. It was a challenging surface with natural wear and tear to navigate, yet India could not meet these challenges,” he concluded.
