New Delhi, July 18 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif commended Ravindra Jadeja for his tenacious innings on the concluding day of the third Test at Lord’s. However, he suggested that a touch more aggression from the seasoned allrounder during the final moments could have swayed the match in favor of India.
While pursuing a target of 193, India's top and middle order faltered against the unpredictable bounce on the pitch, leaving Jadeja with an overwhelming responsibility as the team found itself struggling at 82/7 at one point. The world's top allrounder persevered, scoring an unbeaten 61 off 181 balls, but it was insufficient to secure victory as the host team clinched a narrow 22-run win.
Kaif opined that Jadeja might have missed a slim chance to change the outcome by not being a bit more proactive when the target was within reach.
"Jadeja played a remarkable innings — full credit to him. But perhaps, just perhaps, if he had adopted a 10 per cent more aggressive style, the outcome could have been different. It was a Day 5 pitch — the ball was reversing, the bounce was inconsistent, and the conditions were challenging. When Siraj came to bat, he faced only three deliveries. At that moment, managing the strike is crucial — being cautious about how many balls you're exposing tailenders like Bumrah or Siraj to is vital.
"Jadeja did 90 per cent of the job. Just 10 per cent more — a few calculated risks — and the chase could have been successful. But it’s easy to comment from the outside. Only the batter understands the pressure at that moment. Nevertheless, it was a memorable innings," Kaif told IANS.
The ex-cricketer further contemplated India’s overall batting performance in the series thus far, stating that the batting lineup has been performing admirably and should maintain this approach moving forward.
"I believe 80–90 per cent of the Indian batting lineup has done well. Gill is in form, Jaiswal has made significant contributions, Pant is playing confidently, and Jadeja has been consistently scoring. Sundar has also contributed. If the batting is functioning, there’s no reason to alter it. Just replicate the same strategy.
The fourth Test between India and England is set to commence on July 23 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
