Johannesburg, May 26 (NationPress) Seasoned all-rounder Marizanne Kapp has rejoined South Africa’s squad, which is preparing for a tour to the West Indies featuring three ODIs and three T20Is from June 11 to June 23. All six matches will unfold at the Three Ws Oval in Barbados.
Having missed the 50-over tri-series in Sri Lanka—where India claimed victory—due to a structured conditioning program, she is now ready to represent South Africa once again.
In addition to her return, seam bowlers Tumi Sekhukhune and Ayanda Hlubi are also back in the lineup, while spinner Seshnie Naidu and left-handed batter Lara Goodall have been left out. Miane Smit is set to make her T20I debut after recently entering the ODI format.
This tour of the West Indies is crucial for the Proteas Women as they hone their strategies for the upcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, with the 50-over matches scheduled for June 11, 14, and 17.
“This is an exciting white-ball tour in the West Indies, providing a fantastic chance for players to test their abilities. The more cricket we engage in, the better we understand our combinations and individual progression as a unit. I’m thrilled to welcome Marizanne, Sekhukhune, and Ayanda back into the squad,” stated head coach Mandla Mashimbyi.
“We hope they bring fresh energy and motivation to excel for the team. The series in Sri Lanka was challenging, but we gained many positives, and we will address any gaps identified. I look forward to this, and the players have been preparing diligently for the Caribbean tour,” he added.
The T20I series against the West Indies will take place from June 20 to 23. This will also mark Mashimbyi's inaugural T20I series with the team since his appointment last November, and the squad is set to depart for Barbados on June 2 from OR Tambo International Airport.
“As we continue to build towards the 50-over World Cup, this tour offers a vital opportunity to evaluate our combinations and give players a chance to secure their positions. The blend of experience and emerging talent is intentional, ensuring we prepare a squad that is both competitive and adaptable to varying conditions.”
“Our batting unit exhibited promising growth and confidence during the recent series in Sri Lanka, and we are encouraged by their ongoing development. With new pace options added, our bowling lineup also provides more tactical flexibility to tackle the challenges presented by the West Indies,” remarked Clinton du Preez, convenor of selectors for the Proteas Women.
The South African squad includes: Laura Wolvaardt (captain), Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Annerie Dercksen, Ayanda Hlubi, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Sune Luus, Karabo Meso, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Tumi Sekhukhune, Nondumiso Shangase, Miane Smit, and Chloe Tryon.
