Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced on Friday that Marizanne, who has participated in 149 ODIs to date, will also miss the team’s training camp set for April 6-14 at the Centre of Excellence in Tshwane. This decision comes as the seasoned all-rounder prepares to begin her individual conditioning phase ahead of upcoming tours and the ODI World Cup later this year in India.

For the week-long training session before the Laura Wolvaardt-led ODI team departs for Sri Lanka, CSA has confirmed the selection of a squad comprising 20 players, which includes the uncapped trio of wicketkeeper batter Karabo Meso, all-rounder Miané Smit, and spinner Seshnie Naidu.

The trio will join nationally contracted players, with Nondumiso Shangase, Lara Goodall, and Faye Tunnicliffe also participating. Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi elaborated on the camp's overall strategy, emphasizing the need to adapt to subcontinental conditions.

“Our objectives for the camp are straightforward. We will concentrate on running between the wickets, playing a rotational game, and enhancing that through scenario-based matches to boost awareness.”

“There will also be nets for skill enhancement, alongside significant education regarding team culture. Our intent is to focus on developing players holistically from cultural, skill, and mindset perspectives.”

“Currently, we aim to understand how to adjust to different conditions, navigate various scenarios, and manage challenging situations. It’s essential to help players comprehend how to maintain control when leading and how to respond under pressure.”

Regarding the inclusion of three uncapped players, Mashimbyi expressed, “I’m eager to see these young talents in our setup, and I’m confident the rest of the team will support them, ensuring they feel a sense of belonging as they represent the future of Proteas Women’s cricket.”

“It’s crucial to create a welcoming environment for them first, then encourage their individuality, allowing them to seize opportunities that may arise to significantly impact the team and their careers as cricketers.”
