New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) The cricketing journey for Lhuan-dre Pretorius is currently filled with excitement. The young talent emerged as the leading run-scorer in SA20 2025, amassing 397 runs over 12 innings while representing Paarl Royals.
Additionally, the promising left-handed wicketkeeper-batter has secured a contract with Hampshire for this year's T20 Blast. Although he has yet to be called up to the senior South African team, former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik foresees Pretorius’s potential entry into the IPL, owing to his close experience as a teammate at Paarl Royals.
Karthik, the first Indian player to participate in SA20, has also closely monitored young pacer Kwena Maphaka, whose career has taken off significantly over the last year. This teenage fast bowler's rapid ascent includes being named Player of the Tournament in the Under-19 World Cup, signing with the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, and debuting for the senior South African team across all formats.
He is set to be a traveling reserve for South Africa’s Champions Trophy team and will return to IPL 2025 starting March 22 for the Rajasthan Royals.
“Both are exceptional talents. Lhuan-dre, obviously, was the top run-scorer in the league, which is a remarkable achievement for a young player in his first year. This speaks volumes about his ability. They both have bright futures ahead,” Karthik stated.
“I hope they don’t feel overwhelmed. They are genuine match-winners. Kwena delivers fast balls and is challenging to face when he finds his rhythm. Lhuan-dre possesses all the necessary shots and a strong mindset. As he engages in more competitive cricket, challenges will arise, but he has the skill to overcome them.”
“I wish them all the best because I believe that in the next 12 months, they will evolve into more confident cricketers who will undoubtedly improve. It’s going to be an exciting journey. Once SA20 concluded, I saw Lhuan-dre had been selected for Hampshire’s NatWest T20 Blast games.”
“This indicates that he is being observed worldwide. In today’s game, scouts are present at every tournament. Therefore, it wouldn’t surprise me if Lhuan-dre secures a spot in the IPL soon,” Karthik shared during a recent virtual interaction with IANS.
While Paarl did not clinch the title, both Maphaka and Pretorius benefited greatly from Karthik’s mentorship, learning to blend their youthful zeal with his insightful guidance.
As he prepares to take on the role of batting coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2025, Karthik has found significant fulfillment in nurturing young talents in the fast-paced realm of T20 cricket in South Africa.
“After games, we often had group discussions. It allowed me to connect with many young players who face their own pressures. For instance, right after the tournament's first match, Lhuan-dre and Kwena Maphaka completed their 12th exams, which was a significant milestone for them. It highlights their youth and perspective on the sport and its challenges.”
“Their views on the sport and its difficulties are refreshingly different. Engaging with them and helping them realize that sometimes it’s not crucial to focus too intensively, but rather to maintain a relaxed demeanor away from the game, was important.”
“I shared insights from my experiences in the sport, which proved beneficial. Passing on knowledge is a vital aspect of being a sportsman and someone who can aid young players. I relished that role,” he elaborated.
At Paarl’s Boland Park, Karthik not only enjoyed the stunning scenery but also witnessed the franchise become the first team to bowl a complete 20-over innings using exclusively spinners against the Pretoria Capitals. Will this innovative bowling approach set a precedent in other T20 leagues, including the IPL?
While Karthik expressed optimism about drawing similarities between conditions in Paarl and Tamil Nadu, he acknowledged that the effectiveness of this strategy depends heavily on the pitch’s support for spinners.
“Unlike other leagues such as the IPL, it is primarily about the pitch conditions. Playing in Paarl felt akin to playing for Tamil Nadu. We emphasized spinners and had more in our lineup, and the pitches favored spin as well. That’s why we bowled 20 overs of spin and succeeded in that match.”
“I am confident that in the future, if pitches are conducive to spin, teams won’t hesitate to bowl 20 overs of spin, or at least 16, because when the pitch is slow, spinners can be more challenging to face than fast bowlers.”
Nineteen years prior, a young Dinesh Karthik made his T20I debut in South Africa in 2006, a time when T20 was still a nascent concept. The following year, Karthik was part of the T20 World Cup-winning squad in South Africa, an event that laid the groundwork for the IPL’s phenomenal rise.
Karthik’s recent T20 experience in South Africa allowed him to closely observe the nation’s up-and-coming players, including Pretorius and Maphaka, who may very well emerge as future stars for both South Africa and the IPL.
