Kshitij Naveed Kaul fired a four-under 66 on Wednesday, 12 August to seize a one-shot clubhouse lead at the Coal India Open at Tollygunge Club, Kolkata, before heavy rain forced the suspension of the second round at 3:45 pm IST. The 25-year-old Delhi golfer sits at 10-under 130 overall, with nearly half the 132-player field yet to complete the round.

Kaul's Round 2 Scorecard

Starting off the first tee, Kaul opened with five consecutive pars before stringing together back-to-back birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. A 20-foot birdie putt on the sixth gave him his first breakthrough of the day. He added three more birdies on the back nine — coming close to an eagle on the 10th before settling for birdie — and executed a crucial up-and-down on the 14th to sustain his momentum. His only blemish was a solitary bogey on the 18th, completed in wet conditions as rain began to set in.

'The course played a little longer today, and the conditions were tougher,' Kaul said. 'I had a few early birdie opportunities that I couldn't convert, but I stayed patient and am pleased with the way I kept myself in contention.' He also acknowledged a timely finish: 'We played the final hole in the rain and were fortunate to finish before the weather worsened. I don't think the group behind us managed to complete its round.' Kaul credited his form from the previous week's J&K Open in Srinagar for his confidence heading into this event.

Leaderboard at Suspension

Chandigarh's Akshay Sharma (66-65) carded a five-under 65 to climb from tied ninth to second place at nine-under 131, one shot adrift of Kaul. Overnight leader Om Prakash Chouhan of Mhow — the 2023 DP World PGTI Rankings champion — followed his opening eight-under 62 with an even-par 70, mixing three birdies with three bogeys to slip to eight-under 132 in a share of third. Current DP World PGTI Rankings leader Saptak Talwar (67-65) also shot a five-under 65 to join Chouhan at eight-under, having started the day tied 14th and five shots off the pace.

Rain Disruption and What Comes Next

Play was initially halted at 1 pm IST due to heavy rain, with the round officially suspended at 3:45 pm IST. Ajeetesh Sandhu, who held second place after a first-round 63, completed only three holes on Wednesday and remains at seven-under. Shaurya Bhattacharya, placed tied third after a six-under 64 on day one, had barely begun his second round when play was called off. The projected cut currently stands at one-over. Round two is scheduled to resume at 7 am IST on Thursday, 13 August, before the third round begins later in the day.
