Ahmedabad, Aug 5 (NationPress) The first round of the inaugural Coal India Open concluded with a tie for the lead among four players: Noida's Amardeep Malik, 20-year-old Delhi golfer Anshul Kabthiyal, and Chandigarh's Angad Cheema and Karandeep Kochhar, all finishing at three-under 69 in the INR 1 crore prize-money event hosted at the Kensville Golf & Country Club this Tuesday.
Trailing closely behind their scores, the four players tied for fifth place with two-under 70 were PGTI Order of Merit leader Yuvraj Sandhu from Chandigarh, former champion Om Prakash Chouhan from Mhow, Bengaluru's young talent Manoj S., and Ravi Kumar from Chandimandir.
The initial day of this first competition in the second half of the 2025 PGTI season saw players struggling with the challenging greens at Kensville. Nevertheless, young Anshul Kabthiyal managed the conditions effectively, achieving three birdies on the back nine, complemented by one birdie and one bogey on the front nine.
“I hardly missed a green today. I struck the ball well, and my putting was strong, with the only downside being a three-putt bogey on the sixth hole. My best moment was a remarkable recovery for a birdie on the 14th after landing my tee shot in the trees. During the mid-season break, I focused on my mindset, hoping it will significantly enhance my game,” said Anshul.
Angad Cheema, a winner earlier this year and a consistent performer throughout the 2025 season, had a steady front nine with all pars, followed by an exciting back nine, tallying five birdies and a double-bogey.
“After a successful first half of the season, this round offers me a fantastic chance to maintain my momentum in the second half,” stated Angad, who is currently ranked 10th on the PGTI Order of Merit.
Amardeep Malik mixed five birdies with two bogeys during his opening round.
“I’m extremely pleased with today’s performance. I didn’t expect to be leading with a three-under score. A highlight of my round was the 50-footer birdie putt I made on the fifth hole. The high scores reflect just how challenging the greens are here at Kensville,” mentioned Amardeep.
Local golfer Varun Parikh shot a 74, placing him tied for 32nd, making him the highest-placed among the local competitors.
