Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) Chandigarh’s Yuvraj Sandhu surged into a commanding lead with a tournament-low score of nine-under 61 during the second round of the INR 1 crore prize-money PGTI Players Championship 2025 at The Tollygunge Club Ltd, marking the inaugural event of the 2025 season, here on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old Yuvraj Sandhu (63-61), boasting nine titles including an international victory, followed up his outstanding 63 in Round One with a stellar 61 on Wednesday, taking a solid three-shot lead at 16-under 124. Jamal Hossain (65-62) from Bangladesh, last year's PGTI champion, delivered an impressive eight-under 62 to secure second place at 13-under 127.
Five players were tied for third at 10-under 130, including Honey Baisoya (65), Rahil Gangjee (67), Kolkata’s SSP Chawrasia (66), M. Dharma (63), and Arjun Sharma (67). The cut was set at two-under 138, allowing fifty-nine professionals and one amateur to qualify, with local player Anshul Mishra being the only amateur to make it.
Starting off as the overnight joint leader, Yuvraj Sandhu ignited his round with an eagle from 15 feet on the 10th hole, followed by five additional birdies until the first hole, where he landed his shots within five feet on three occasions.
Despite conceding a bogey on the fifth, he quickly responded with two excellent iron shots that set up birdies on the next two holes. He concluded his round with the longest birdie of the day from 25 feet on the eighth, just shy of the 1998 course record set by Indrajit Bhalotia.
Reflecting on his performance, Yuvraj, a previous winner at Tollygunge Club, noted, “It was a solid ball-striking day for me. I’ve been working on my tee shots with my coach Gurbaaz Mann, and the results are finally visible.
“Last season, I played numerous events in windy conditions, which taught me to focus more on my tee shots in such scenarios. The emphasis was on shaping the shots and fully committing to them. Given the swirling wind today, the hard work I’ve done on my hitting has truly paid off. My comfort level at Tollygunge also boosts my confidence moving forward,” he added.
Jamal Hossain executed a chip-in for eagle on the 10th, complemented by eight birdies and two bogeys, finishing with a round of 62. This performance propelled him five places up from his overnight tied seventh position. Defending champion Manu Gandas was tied for 50th at two-under 138.
