Bengaluru, Aug 17 (NationPress) A transformative era is dawning for Indian football, with Khalid Jamil now leading the senior India men’s national team – marking the first time in 13 years that an Indian coach has taken the reins in the Blue Tigers’ locker room.
The national training camp commenced on Independence Day (August 15), as players and staff gathered in Bengaluru, culminating in the initial training session at the Padukone-Dravid Centre for Sports Excellence on August 16.
The exclusion of striker Sunil Chhetri from the squad for the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup has sparked some discussion; however, Jamil assures that the door is always open for him.
“Sunil is a legend of Indian football. I have faced him in matches, and I’ve witnessed his performances countless times; he is among my top players. He serves as a role model for Indian football, and I want him to know that the door remains open for him,” Jamil expressed.
The national camp kicked off with 22 players, while 13 others are currently engaged with their clubs in the Durand Cup.
In his first international role, Jamil stated, “It is a privilege to represent the country. This has always been my aspiration, and now it’s a reality, which is a gratifying feeling. A significant challenge lies ahead, with numerous areas requiring our attention. I recognize the immense responsibility before me, and I am grateful that the Federation (AIFF) deemed me worthy of this role.”
Jamil's inaugural task will be the CAFA Nations Cup, with India placed in Group B, set to travel to Hisor, Tajikistan, to face the hosts (August 29), IR Iran (September 1), and Afghanistan (September 4). The leading teams from groups A and B will compete in the final on September 8 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, while the second-placed teams will clash for third place in Hisor on the same day.
Keeping track of the remaining 13 players, Jamil noted, “We commenced the camp with some players unavailable, but we possess the necessary personnel to kickstart our preparations. The key is to maintain our unity as a team, as this marks India’s inaugural participation in the CAFA Nations Cup, presenting an excellent opportunity to face stronger opponents. Therefore, we kindly request the cooperation of clubs to release players promptly for adequate participation in the preparatory camp.”
Moreover, the newly appointed India head coach is also focused on the AFC Asian Cup Final Round Qualifiers, where India will compete against Singapore during the October FIFA International Window (October 9 in Singapore and October 14 in India) in their Group C matches.
“Competing against quality teams in the CAFA Nations Cup will be beneficial for us. There are no excuses; we have ample time to prepare,” Jamil affirmed. “Facing stronger opponents like Tajikistan and Iran will certainly aid our preparation for the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.”
To date, India has played two matches, drawn one (0-0 at home against Bangladesh), and lost one (0-1 away in Hong Kong), leaving them at the bottom of Group C with just a point. Tasked with revitalizing the Blue Tigers’ fortunes, Jamil intends to approach the task methodically.
“We must focus on the basics and proceed step by step. Although we treat these as friendly matches, I want players who are fully fit. By fit, I mean players who are 100 percent ready,” he explained. “Our first training session was productive, but there's much improvement needed.”
“While we view these as preparatory matches, this is serious business for us. I need time to adapt to this team, and the players need time to adapt to my style,” he added. “My doors are always open to everyone. Anyone performing well will be selected.”
“The reason for his absence in this camp is that we are participating in a tournament that will serve as preparation for our Asian Cup Qualifiers,” he clarified. “I also aim to evaluate other players during this FIFA window. I had a discussion with him about this; it’s always a joy to have a player of his caliber in our squad.”
Jamil encouraged Indian football fans to remain supportive of the team as they strive to improve. “I am incredibly grateful to the fans. Their unwavering support has been invaluable. Please continue to back us and exercise patience.”
