New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially announced the appointment of Khalid Jamil as the new head coach for the Senior India Men's National Football Team.
This decision follows the AIFF Executive Committee's endorsement of Jamil from a shortlist of three candidates presented by the AIFF Technical Committee. The other two candidates included former national team head coach Stephen Constantine and Stefan Tarkovic, who previously managed the Slovakia national team.
At 48 years old, Jamil, a former Indian midfielder and now an AFC Pro Licensed coach, becomes the first Indian to lead the national team since Savio Medeira in 2012. He is also the first Indian to take on the full-time role since Sukhwinder Singh.
Jamil has made significant contributions within the Indian football scene, leaving his mark on the I-League, I-League 2, and the Indian Super League (ISL). His tenure at Aizawl FC was particularly notable, culminating in the team winning its only top-flight title. Most recently, he joined Jamshedpur FC midway through the 2023–24 season, steering them to the Super Cup semifinals and subsequently to a runner-up finish and an ISL semifinal appearance.
He takes over after a disappointing term from Manolo Marquez, the former head coach of FC Goa, who left after securing just one win in over a year.
Jamil's initial challenge will be significant as India prepares for the CAFA Nations Cup, following Malaysia's withdrawal from the tournament, which falls outside the official FIFA calendar. This is part of the lead-up to two crucial AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Singapore in October.
India has been drawn in Group B and will face hosts Tajikistan on August 29, defending champions Iran on September 1, and Afghanistan on September 4.
India recently faced a heartbreaking 0-1 defeat against Hong Kong in the second match of the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers Final Round, following a goalless draw with Bangladesh in their opening match.
